(TechZwn) Scary You don't have to be a mad scientist to build ten-story Tesla coils and tell the media you're working on "being able to control where lightning strikes," but it certainly helps   (techzwn.com) divider line 29

Mad scientist don't build world destroying lightning guns.
Mad engineers do.

Which one?

I'm going with Red Alert 2.

I love that level in Spyro.

Tesla coils are overpowered. All the soviets need to do is build a supwer powerplant and suddenly they have a tier 3 defense available without having had to rely on a research center. A nerf is needed.

I built a 4 foot one. God are those things fun to play with. There was no television in my area when the thing was on.
2x 15kV 90mA NSTs. It was godlike. I recommend anyone with an EE degree build one at least once.

A warning: Once you do, you'll want to build a coilgun, a railgun, a can smasher, and an EMP device. Kilovolts are like crack. Even normal people easily drop to mad engineer psychosis once faced with 330,000 VAC at 40kHz. It's just a fact.

Hey, LOD:

Try getting your "teslamobile" outside the near field of the coil and see if you still get that amazing power transfer.

/voila, mystery solved

I'm surprised we haven't seen any mad engineers build generator-powered EMP guns you could fit in vans, driving around and trying ATMs for no reason.

Ahem, I said I'M SURPRISED THAT...

Yup, the 2nd one is the best. In every sense.

Was hoping someone would post this.

If anyone is going to destroy the world it will be an engineer. A scientist may have the desire to test a doomsday weapon but are restrained by the fact that they'd be unable to publish their results and secure funding for the next doomsday weapon should they actually use it.

The scary thing is, deep down... that's all engineers.

I think it's the lack of women in the engineering departments at universities.

Tesla coils.

Marine1 - I work at a science and engineering school. Trust me when I say that although our women engineering students may compose a smaller percentage of enrollment, they are just as weird and potentially dangerous as the guys....I think it's inherent in the breed, y'know?

Absolutely true. Publish or perish. And perishing doesn't get you tenure....

PMS and Tesla Coils, this can't be good for men (maybe)

Even if building a giant Tesla coil on it's own wasn't cool enough, I think he may have a good point in regard to the science. Our best understanding of how hot dense plasma's interact with neutrals is based off experimental evidence. Analytic and computational methods generally fail to capture the complexity of the problem. Seems like building a bigger better experimental apparatus to study a poorly understood aspect of the problem could yield useful knowledge.
Just because it's fun and cool doesn't mean it can't be good science

So,,, I guess we are now up to Level 3 towers in Defense Grid,, too bad they take a while to recharge fully.
