Far be it for me to crtiticize somebody else's headline but that's a pretty long walk to get around to the Zooker getting canned.

(copypasta from redlit thread) Illini fan but I still respect the work he did bringing the program up from an absolute disaster area to having a slight modicum of respectability. He brought the team from A to B with a surprising amount of NFL talent. He just couldn't coach them up/keep them out of the squad car enough to get from B to C.

And he got REALLY obsessed with switching out QB's back and forth this season, ruining both of their confidence. Keep Scheelhaase in through adversity and maybe he'd still have a job.

/Will keep this in the clipboard for the greened thread.
//Nobody's going to greenlight a Ron Zook thread, would they?

You'd be surprised at how many of my Gator alumni friends have said that Urban Meyer is dead to them if he takes the tOSU job. I'm just pissed because as a Badger fan that Ohio State game each year just got a lot tougher.

Well, that was the worst kept secret in sports for the last month or so. Kinda clever by OSU, though. Instead of people in Ohio (and elsewhere I suppose) having to talk about Michigan getting their first win in 7 years they get to talk about Urban Meyer coming to the team.

Oh I figured that much...but there's plenty of UF fans who are plenty pissed as well. I'm not sure why tOSU fans would be pissed, though. It isn't like Urban Meyer is a shiatty coach. If you mad because he whipped your team in the BCS championship, well that's farking dumb. I think UF fans have more reason to be angry.

I'm a Gator alum, and I don't give a damn really. Urban Meyer kicks ass and takes names, and will not put up with player bullshiat. (He kicked freaking Cam Newton out for chrissakes). As for Ron Zook: He almost destroyed the program Spurrier built. Anyone that thinks he's worth more than a turd of dead dog shiat is an idiot. Oh, but I repeat myself.

Ron Zook did something Spurrier could never do: Win at Tallahassee. He was always a pretty good recruiter, which is part of the reason he was promoted to head coach. The team that won Urban his first NC was primarily a Zook built team. That said, he never had a shot to keep that job from the day he was hired.

True, Zook sucked...but he recruited a LOT of Meyer's first national championship team.

I love this hire.

The Buckeyes can't win against the elite of the SEC, and without Tebow Meyer can't do it either.

He's perfect for them.

Zook was a stellar recruiter but couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

As a gator fan who suffered through the zook era...you have got to be trolling.

Zook was always mediocre as a coach. Meyer was good when he had the right QB for his system be it alex smith or tebow. If cam newton hadn't thrown his stolen laptop and UF career out the window, UF probably would have had another national championship. If OSU gets a spread QB they will be good.

We have a winner. Meyer is a good coach, but won't be able to recruit against the SEC at OSU

As a Purdue fan, I'd just like to say that I am deeply saddened by this news. Ron Zook has been very giving and generous to the Boilermakers over the last half-decade. We will sincerely miss his presence on the Illinois sideline.

Illinois fan, obviously it was Zook's time to go but I agree with The Great EZE that the program is still probably better than it was before he was here. Wasn't too hard to be a step up from Turner, and we at least had some fun the Rose Bowl season.

Thanks for the sudden succession of Illinois NFL RBs though, I guess. Nice to see lots of Illini doing well for themselves in the pros at least.

Tressel recruited pretty decently against the SEC at OSU. Didn't they put more players in the NFL over the last 10 years than about any school in the country (and more than the vast majority of the SEC)?

But let's not kid ourselves. Being able to sign 120 players over a 4 year period is a huge advantage over being able to sign 90 or so. That's why OSU and UM will always be handicapped.

Fortunately it's not like he ever had success with a non-BCS team and won a BCS bowl with them or any...whoops! He's won everywhere he's gone, Tebow or no.

Tebow was just the poster boy for a few years. The real brains of the organization was Dan Mullen, who had followed Meyer everywhere up until he took the Mississippi State job in 2009. Tebow and the other returning seniors were able to will the Gators to one more successful season after Mullen's departure but the house of cards quickly crumbled soon after they had left as well.

The QB coach for Meyer's teams until he hit Florida? Sure, okay.
