Awesome - I'm jealous! How were the supporting acts?

Cool video. Have Opeth given up harsh vocals permanently? Or just for this album?

Cool video. That said, the new album really hasn't resonated with me yet. It just sounds like a different band, it's not BAD... maybe I need to give it a few more listens.

I remember the first time I listened to A Fair Judgement, the first Opeth song I ever heard. It knocked me off my farking chair it was so awesome. And as I've become a real fan of the band the albums that I like the most are Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries (Harlequin Forest FTW), Deliverance and Damnation. Damnation is an album that I can (and have) listened to on infinite repeat for weeks on end while driving to and from work. It really is a flawless album.

I appreciate what Opeth is doing with the new album but it just hasn't done anything for me yet. Watershed didn't blow me outta the water either but I still like it more than Heritage, it's still a fairly solid album in its own right.

Like I said, maybe I gotta give it a few more listens.

Interesting.

I usually get shiat out of "SHMHC", but this band (or this song, at least) is reminiscent to me of Uriah Heep. Takes me back, man. That was a band I found by innocent accident when my mother dragged me out to a weekend garage sale in, mmm, maybe '83 or something. I guess the cover of the "Demons and Wizards" LP seemed innocuous enough to her. Those SOBs could *sing*. Any occasional screaming was well fit to the music, not the whole act itself.

Maybe there's some hope left for "HM".

I like the new album. I'm more than a little surprised to see it on SHMHC because it barely fits even the broadest definition of heavy metal (the heaviest bits sound a bit like Deep Purple I suppose), but Akerfeldt's made no secret of his worship of early 70's Euro prog (Blackwater Park was originally the name of an obscure English prog rock band) and it was inevitable that he'd make an album like this.

That said, I hope they follow this up with something heavy and a little more straightforward.

Some post-Thanksgiving music to digest by:

Blasphemophagher - Perverse Delight (new window)

Blasphemophagher - Devastating Radioactive Torments (new window)

Blasphemophagher - Demiurge of Thermonuclear damnation (new window)

Blasphemophagher - Nuclear War Now! (new window)

Descending Darkness - Leid (new window; I can't wait to hear the rest of this album! The two songs I've heard so far are savagely good)

Abigail - A Witch Named Aspilcuetta (new window - maybe rec'ed here before, but it's a good one)

Metalheads are pretty well known for being open minded and accepting of different musical styles, aren't they?

;)

I heard the track that Mikael did for the latest God of War game, and when I heard that he was dropping the usual metal fair and going without the death growls, I knew where they were headed. I LOVE the new album. So much energy and adrenaline.

/it did take me a few listens to get the feel for it. But when I did... just makes me excited to see what they do next.

Quite pleasant. Not that I know much about this young-folks music, but isn't it a bit, er, mellow for the genre?

i don't think this is meant to be enjoyed by people who don't smoke marijuana, but if I was high I'd probably love it.

HighZoolander: Awesome - I'm jealous! How were the supporting acts?

Sorry dude. Got a wee bit sidetracked.

Black Cobra stepped in instead of Monstro. I caught about half their set and I was pretty impressed.

The Sword I was pretty excited to see because I know their stuff. They were far heavier in concert. Maybe it was just the energy of the crowd, but they really packed a punch.

Kyuss. Well, what can I say? They played Fatso Forgetso and Whitewater, which were two I desperately wanted to hear. To cap off a perfect evening they played Spaceship Landing. F*cking epic.

Woah, nice! I don't remember ever hearing Monstro, but I've been enjoying the hell out of Black Cobra's new album (via youtube) - I can't wait for its official release - it's really a damn good album.

I'm not a big fan of Heritage, but Opeth gave us some of the best metal albums of the last two decades. I'm not going to complain if Mikael wants to write a love letter to his record collection.

Listen to:

Ouroboros (new window)

Beyond Creation (new window)

Thurisaz (new window)

For any fans of Black Pyramid, their new album is out - buy it here and support the band and a very good label: Allthatisheavy (new window)

The band may not be completely finished, but the very public meltdown of their singer has been one of the more sad/interesting things I've ever read on the internet (it's not hard to find if you do a google search for Black Pyramid).

/I haven't heard the album yet, still waiting for my copy to arrive

Thanks for the heads up, loved their other album.

It seems as though that they have. (new window)

It's the first time I've heard anything off their newest album and thought it was pretty good. While I like Opeth I never really kept up with them, may check this one out now.
As for the video, smoking that bowl before watching it was entirely worth it.

That sucks. Some of their best stuff is when he mixes both styles of vocals. Although Damnation was a great album without the need for harsh vocals, I'll still miss it if he gives it up entirely. I still need to pick up Heritage. I've only heard a little bit from Spotify.

It arrived today in the mail (and I just ordered it Friday!) - I'm listening to it now, and it is phenomenally good! The production is fuzzy but a bit fuller than their first album. So far (the first three songs) the songs are farking awesome - every bit as good as their first album, if not better.

Well, that sucked. The video was amateurish and the music simplistic.

finally found a decent clip of one of Black Pyramid's new songs (there are a couple of live clips too - for this song and Night Queen, but the sound quality is terrible) -

Black Pyramid - Mercy's Bane (new window)

I like that kind of music up until the moment that the vocals start. I never understand why such talented musicians don't find equally talented vocalists. Is there any metal with a decent singer ?
