Could it be that most modern bands are a bunch of talentless hacks that can barely get through a studio performance, much less make a live album without lip syncing?

Get off my lawn

I don't like listening to live recordings. Sure, going to the concert is fun, but the live albums sound crappy compared to the studio versions.

The Tragically Hip -- Live Between Us
Pearl Jam -- Live on Two Legs
Nirvana -- From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah
Dozens of iTunes sessions (Best Coast, Great Lakes Swimmers).

Yep. No more live albums.

You can't put out a live album if all you're doing is lip-synching to the studio album.

2011-11-27 02:57:06 PM
75% of my collection is live stuff. There is a ton of it out there, especially all the re-masters. Most are good, some suck tail, but the bad ones are the poor efforts of bands that can't play. My tastes notwithstanding, there is nothing more exciting that live music.
It does seem that there aren't that many new things that are worthy ....

/thank you amazon

GAT_00: WHAR Exit Stage Left WHAR

Damn right. (Although you probably won't see it.)

As for "Stop Making Sense," the beauty of that is not just the album, but the movie. Byrne and Demme crafted quite a film as the set and the music build from very pared down simple numbers to more and more elaborate productions song by song. The album is a fine companion piece, but the film really needs to be seen to get the whole experience.

Probably because every band I've seen live in the past ten years feels the need to say "Thankyouverymuch" between every song. Just gimme some medleys and keep your talking to interviews.

Also, change up the set list. After two weeks of seeing the house band at a bar, I don't even want to go anymore because I already know what they're going to play. When I saw a few Aerosmith and NIN(not at the same time) concerts back in the late 90's the shows were a few years apart but still had the same songs in the same order

I hate live versions... Every song begins and ends with 10-15 seconds of overly loud applause and the music itself sounds like ass..

I can't stand live albums. I love live shows. Live albums can't capture that, and they can't capture the quality of a studio recording. The only exception is "Fear of the Dark" off of Maiden's "Live in Rio". That's probably the best rendition of that song.

Hell yeah. That and the Luther College one was like 75% of my in-car listening for 3 or 4 years there.

Most live albums are pointless no matter how good the band is.

They go out and play a series of shows, pick the best takes, and go back to the studio and overdub the shiat out of the best takes. Really, what's the point? Why not just release another studio album of greatest hits with the live versions (e.g. extended solos, longer versions, etc)?

Pretty much my thought. Only "live album" I have came as a delux version of a studio album. It's the same songs except the singer is clearly tired in many, lots of screaming, lots of pauses and the acoustics are inferior because I'm still not even AT the event. If they were binaural recordings they would at least capture a fair representation of the sound of the concert, but not much else.

Most "live" albums were MAJORLY doctored up in the studio.

There's a market for it, as any Pearl Jam or Springsteen fan will tell you. The problem, as I see it, is that most concerts have gone from "really good band playing their stuff live" to "shiatty pop star lipsyncing while a spectacle goes on behind her". You cant see a spectacle on a live album recording.

I assume that my copy of Throwing Copper got mixed up in a move and ended up with one of my room mates in the late 90's. Frankly, I didn't miss it enough to investigate. If subby knows where my Animaniacs cd ended up though, I would greatly appreciate the tip.

here are some incredible live albums:

Much better than any Ramones studio album, this thing kicks all sorts of ass

Apart from "Jailbreak", this is also better than any of their studio albums

images.uulyrics.com
Incredible. Disc 2 is simply mindboggling

image.lyricspond.com
Not the same concert, but several, but still... is it bad that I prefer songs from London Calling in their live versions? I mean, Guns of Brixton on this live album is 10 times better than the studio take

that's it for now
