My supervisor's husband is a police officer and he works on a quota. He has a number of tickets to write (I'm not sure how many) per day. After he writes those tickets he hangs out at a business of one if his friends until time to go home.
She has also mentioned how both of them have gotten out of speeding tickets (at least one time he was exceeding 100mph) because he is a policeman.
But they're not corrupt. fark 'em.

I'm proud that we've managed to so effectively beat Illinois, New York and Louisiana to be the most corrupt state in the nation. It takes skill to beat those three.

Well, maybe we'll find out that repeated use of radar guns causes testicular shrinkage. The universe will sort this out somehow.

So the guy made $19,000 for 10 months work?

What they're really saying is that constables are too stupid to make a decent salary.

2011-11-27 02:44:47 PM
Is that before or after taxes?

2011-11-27 03:00:04 PM
Too bad nobody bothered to ask him just why he felt the need to get a drug dog if he wasn't supposed to be stopping people in the first place (the cynic in my would also like to know what percentage of stops the drug dog also gets out, what percentage of those the dog supposedly hits on something & the percent of the time absolutely nothing was found (or nothing more than the size of the drop bag that was in his pocket...)).

I didn't think it possible but apparently there is a group of police even more corrupt than the regular TN agencies.

Day-um. I want that gig. I can have my day job, and then go out and write tickets for an hour each night - even if I only average 2 a night, that's over $16K extra a year for sitting on a busy corner looking for burned out headlights. It'd take me about 30 minutes or so.

2011-11-27 04:38:06 PM
Is he ticketing people for things they haven't done or fabricating violations that don't exist? No? OK then, I don't see the problem.

I'd like about a half dozen pre-filled-out ticket books with specific lines left blank. I'd be issuing and issuing as fast as I could. If you were industrious you could clear $100 an hour easy.

/This whole deal sounds shady.

Just a few bad apples.

2011-11-27 04:47:16 PM
A guy could make a lot of money around here ticking drivers for not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. One corner in particular is so dangerous to cross that it's safer to jaywalk through 4 lanes of traffic a quarter mile away.

Don't ya just love it when ass-holes are given an imitation badge and then the county or State don't create any regulations to make sure the ass-hole doesn't break the law(by doing things in a way to just make money), or making sure that when the asshole breaks the law and harasses people, that people can get the motherfarker instantly arrested for their crime..

These "law enforcement officers" are in essence being paid $20,000 a year if they are lucky.
Therein lies your problem. Want to attract better people to law enforcement? Pay more.

250 on gas per week. thats some bull. Ok assuming 4 dollars a galloon and 20 mpg that 1250 miles in a week. More importantly thats 1250 miles in a single county. How the Fark do you drive that much.

2011-11-27 04:50:42 PM
I think the bit about spending $1500 for a K-9 drug dog is the best part.

That's... unbelievably cheap for a trained drug dog. The cheapest ones (raised from a puppy that you provide) start at over twice that.

For $1500, he got... a pet German Shepherd.

2011-11-27 04:51:17 PM
This guy sounds less like a corrupt cop and more like a wannabe that was rejected from the force and found a convenient way around it.

Can someone please clear this up for me. Bare with me, I'm Canadian, as such every city has a police department, paid for by taxes. With clear architectures, all the way up to Chief, whom I presume answers to the Mayor/city council.

That said... so this guy has no boss? Who hired him? Where does he clock in/out? Is that $19,000 his entire take-home pay? No salary or hourly wage on top of that?

I'm being completely serious, very confused here.

/with stuff like this going on, no wonder the world views the southern US as some 1800's lawless wild west

I don't know about this guy, but from what I understand, most of these guys use it as either a part time gig, or are retired cops/military who use it to supplement the pension. Very rarely is it the only income they have.

I've seen a cop stop a car, cite the driver, and take off again in less than two minutes.

They go that fast when they have a good flow of cars through a speed trap and everybody is over the limit. The cops are like bears grabbing salmon.

I've had a cop pull me over take my DL and insurance, tell me to wait while he goes off to catch another speeder before returning to me to write my ticket.

When I was driving a patrol car on UK roads I could easily burn 3 tanks of petrol in a shift, driving up to 450 miles in a day. Not that much every day, but a minimum of 150 miles.
Add a set of tyres every 14 days, plus a shiat-load of other maintenance.

This guy isn't making much profit after he's bought his own car etc.

FTFA: Last year he said he shelled out $7,000 on a used police cruiser. Most recently, he said, he spent $1,500 to buy a K9 drug dog. He said he also spends money twice a month driving to North Carolina for K9 training.

I guess you're kind of right, he appears to have bought an untrained K9. I'm sure when it's all done with its training it'll be worth $3,000.

The problem with leaving things up to the universe is that that biatch kills indiscriminately. She'll resort to a gamma ray burst, a big ass rock thrown our way, a supernova or a total existence failure to solve this problem. Looked at that way, maybe a riot or twenty isn't such a big deal.

That would be great. To know the real speed limit is one of the most frequent wishes of drivers. Dave Barry wrote a column about the secret. He eventually got the number from a Florida state trooper, on the condition that he not publish it. I know the numbers around here (under 80 on the Pike, for example) but long distance travel is more of a gamble.

Wow. I'm more shocked that they actually still have Constables.

I lived in a pretty backwards, rural county in my teens, and even THEY got rid of the elected constables because of the blatent incompetance and favoritism the position promoted.

May 10th. Thank God for the rain which has helped wash away the garbage and trash off the sidewalks. I'm workin' long hours now, six in the afternoon to six in the morning. Sometimes even eight in the morning, six days a week. Sometimes seven days a week. It's a long hustle but it keeps me real busy. I can take in three, three fifty a week. Sometimes even more when I do it off the meter.

After RTFA, it sounds like they're potentially getting constables to do police work for what could be near/less than minimum wage ($19k in 10 months, it all depends on how much time he spends, but to get $19k I assume it's his "full-time" job at that point). And I'm sure the city of course gets way more than they pay out from the fines (probably on the order of 10x-100x as much money).

The scary thing is, to be a constable, you do NOT have to be a POST-Trained and Certified law enforcement officer. It's an elected position.

To put this in context, even unarmed security guards have to have a license.

39-16-102. Bribery of public servant.

(a) A person commits an offense who:

(1) Offers, confers, or agrees to confer any pecuniary benefit upon a public servant with the intent to influence the public servant's vote, opinion, judgment, exercise of discretion or other action in the public servant's official capacity; or

(2) While a public servant, solicits, accepts or agrees to accept any pecuniary benefit upon an agreement or understanding that the public servant's vote, opinion, judgment, exercise of discretion or other action as a public servant will thereby be influenced.

(b) It is no defense to prosecution under this section that the person sought to be influenced was not qualified to act in the desired way because the person had not yet assumed office, lacked jurisdiction, or for any other reason.

(c) (1) Bribery of a public servant under subdivision (a)(1) is a Class B felony.

(2) A public servant accepting or agreeing to accept a bribe under subdivision (a)(2) is a Class B felony.

To put that in context, a Class B Felony is the same tier as Vehicular Homicide in Tennessee.

ZOMG! heaven forbid that we pay our elected officials a pittance!
19,000 in 10 months? that's nearly two whole thousand dollars per month!
Not counting the 35% self employment tax, the $250 per month on fuel, furnishing your own friggin' cop car, your own k9 unit, your own training...

I'd expect that after you take out all of the shiat that they have to pay for they make about what the average McDonald's employee does.
