Ok, boycott the lectures and don't learn the material. Fail the course and don't meet your requirements to graduate. Don't receive your medical degree and don't get to practice without knowing some of the basic tenets of biology.

The system works.

Then sue for religious discrimination and demand that they give you the degree.

Do you think such a case would stand a chance? They weren't in a religious academic program, they're in medical school. Chances are they're going to have to learn things about biology and the scientific method. If I study a mathematics degree I can't sue because their teachings of derivatives conflicts with my religion's teachings of an unchanging universe. Hopefully any court would see that and toss the case out on principle.

Hopefully.

It's kind of a sweet deal, really.

It's weird. Darwinism and evolution weren't controversial topics in Turkey until recently. Then the guy mentioned in the article (Harun Yahya) comes along and starts publishing these anti-evolution screeds (interestingly, he was influenced by American Christian movements in that regard). Anyway, he's super-shady and heads up what's basically a cult. When I was growing up, they would warn young women about his cult as they liked to recruit among educated, upper middle-class women. He's also into publishing books about conspiracy theories. He's like a Muslim L. Ron Hubbard in a way. Very strange.

Evolution is the cumulative change in the relative frequencies of variant genetic alleles that occurs over the course of generations.

It happens. We have seen it happen. It is as much a fact as anything in science can ever be. Pretending that it doesn't happen is as ridiculous as pretending that the earth is flat or that invisible goblins are responsible for gravity.

There is nothing about evolution that has to conflict with religious faith. If your preacher, minister or Imam tells you otherwise, s/he is lying to you.

You can believe that God or Allah or Vishnu or whoever is causing those frequencies to change, if that's really what you want to believe. But if you deny that those frequencies change, you are simply wrong.

So, I would say if you skip out on science portions of medical school, you should not pass medical school. Problem solved.

I like how the article doesn't manage to fit "None of these bullet points are in any way accurate" under that giant farked-up screed of a poster.

Can I have change for one out of context quote, an obfuscation, and a pathetic misunderstanding of the basics of the scientific method? I keep getting those in my email.

kingoomieiii: "None of these bullet points are in any way accurate"

Right off the bat, the revelation of Piltdown Man as a hoax was a RELIEF to biologists, as its presence in the timeline didn't make any damned sense. It it HADN'T been a hoax, they would have had to rewrite biology books.

Nebraska Man-

It was originally described by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1922, on the basis of a tooth that rancher and geologist Harold Cook found in Nebraska in 1917. An illustration of H. haroldcookii was done by artist Amédée Forestier, who modeled the drawing on the proportions of "Pithecanthropus" (now Homo erectus), the "Java ape-man," for the Illustrated London News. Osborn was not impressed with the illustration, calling it: "a figment of the imagination of no scientific value, and undoubtedly inaccurate."

Further field work on the site in 1925 revealed that the tooth was incorrectly identified. Other parts of the skeleton were also found. According to these newly discovered pieces, the tooth belonged neither to a man nor to an ape, but to a fossil of an extinct genus of peccary called Prosthennops, and its identification as an ape was retracted in the journal Science in 1927.

Although the identity of H. haroldcookii did not achieve general acceptance in the scientific community, and although the species was retracted a decade after its discovery, critics of evolution have promoted this episode as an example of the many scientific errors that can ultimately undermine the credibility of how paleontology and hominid evolution theories are crafted, and how such information is peer reviewed or accepted as mainstream knowledge. The fact that the proposal of this species was eventually rejected by the scientific community as being obviously flawed does, however, work in favor of the scientific method, which constantly seeks to critique and validate its theories, and to remove those that do not stand up to evidence.

The accepted evolutionary history of the horse is not in question.

No one cares that 19th century illustrations were wrong. Both Ramapithecus (Sivapithecus) and Australopithecus are pre-human, extinct species of apes.

Haeckel's illustrations were attacked by creationists without merit, and have never even needed vindication.

What I don't get about evolution deniers is that they also believe in Noah's Ark (or at least the Venn Diagram has a large overlap). When someone brings up the absurdity of packing 2 of every single species of animal onto a boat, they usually say that he only needed to bring one type of animal and they "changed" into all the different species that exist today. Sounds a lot like the "E" word to me.

We need to separate the religious retards from the rest of the population. They can cure themselves with Jesus and we'll just use plain old medicine. Lets see how that goes.

If you believe small changes don't add up over time, you should also be shunning integral calculus. The idea behind evolution isn't constrained to biology alone.

How can these people even get in to medical school in the first place?

And it what point does it break down? Do the lectures about germ theory and bacterial adaptation to antibiotics get them all wonked out as well?
