You say that like Cool Runnings doesn't merit serious consideration. In reality, it has pride. It has power. It is a bad add movie that won't take no crap from nobody.

Exactly. Cool Runnings has everything, it's got John Candy... it probably has other redeeming features... Rocky has sweaty men hugging. It's no contest. Cool Runnings is the best film ever made.

That's just how movies were paced in the 70s. I personally like it. Rocky is iconic, an Oscar winner, and a classic. I think Cool Runnings is likeable but ultimately forgettable fairly hackneyed 90s schlock.

But hey, that's just my opinion. I'm not going to fight you over Rocky vs. Cool Runnings.

I was going to say "No way dude, sweaty men hugging was during Rocky III", but then I remembered the "no rematch" part of Rocky. Is there a sweaty hugging scene in each movie?

Rocky III could have been the best of all time.....if Roddy Piper had a role in it.

Also in the 70's the Oscar voters loved schmalz: All the President's Men, Bound for Glory, Network and Taxi Driver and Rocky is better than all of them??

Even ignoring the sequels, it's a fine "root for the underdog" movie and it no way deserved an oscar.

He's an Italian-American Boxer. That combination accounts for maybe half a dozen brain cells.

Sorry, M.B., but I'm having trouble with this character. Is he supposed to have some sort of neurological impairment, like "Rain Man" or "Awakenings"? I mean, what the hell am I doing here?

Complications his mother suffered during labor forced her obstetricians to use two pairs of forceps during his birth; misuse of these accidentally severed a nerve and caused paralysis in parts of Stallone's face. As a result, the lower left side of his face is paralyzed - including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin - an accident which has given Stallone his snarling look and slightly slurred speech.

I once saw a CBC production of "The Walter Gretzky Story" in a bus full of geriatrics on a 5 hour bus ride back from a Casino where I had lost all of my money in 90 minutes while feeling queasy from a questionable buffet. It was a terrible movie.

Rocky IV was the best of the series, though you could probably convince me of Rocky III's superiority, too. The first movie was technically the best-made and certainly the best "film," but if we're talking rewatchability and entertainment value, nothing can top James Brown in a blue jumpsuit, a transsexual talking robot, Rocky evading the KGB by running up a 4000-foot mountain, and then subsequently winning the Cold War for the U.S. while brain-damaged and draped in the American flag. It might be our nation's cultural high point.

I was a fan of the sexiest tomboy beanpole on the planet, myself. But, yes, a UK list without BILB? Fail.

Not to mention:

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

I guess the UK is not into baseball:

Bull Durham
The Pride of the Yankees

Pool:

The Hustler
The Color of Money

Cycling:

Breaking Away

Golf:

Caddyshack
Tin Cup

I'd add Rollerball as futuristic sport

Of course it is to you. Both are stories about an underdog, but only one is palatable to a liberal.

Maybe, but Rocky tells a real story, and is a real film. It's not about gratuitous macho scenes (of course, neither is Cool Runnings). Anyway, I've always given Sly a pass on his terrible paycheck shiat because the original Rocky is genuinely a great film. Who can't identify with the character, unless everything in life was given to you?

Hell, he even lost the fight and you still felt great about it. Boxing is just the metaphor. This is what good movies do.

BTW, the all-time best sports film is The Natural. If you watch that last home run scene without getting emotional, you're a reptile. No, the focus is on the characters rather than the game, but what a great farking movie (and Randy Newman soundtrack).

Kickass, period.
