"This is the best gift I've ever had, and I will keep it forever."

She says that now, but as soon as Boyfriend Built iPad 2 comes out she'll toss the old one.

Once again proving that building it yourself is always better. How he got enough parts to run win 7 as anything other than a slide show is beyond me though.

Why not link to the original article? It's far better and has pics!

Also, that guy is awesome!

Dude's in China. If he wanted a cheap knockoff iPad, why didn't he just go down to the store?

So, he cobbled together a Windows 7 tablet. How is that an iPad?

Those look like cheap chinese flatback crystals. Not Austrian crystal rhinestones. Well, ya get what you pay for.

There's a massive markups in China for all electronics imported into the country. My cousin told me that if they were to buy a computer in China, it's a little less than double the price we'd pay for a comparable computer in the US.

No wireless. Less space than a Nomad. Lame.

//Actually, pretty damn impressed he pulled this off.

Chinese doesn't have problems with the 'l' and 'r' sounds! That joke was stupid even when properly used, but it's a whole new level of stupid when it's wrongly used.

They dont want imported stuff cutting into the rampant black market, grey market, complete and total theft of intellectual property, trademark and copyright material - and if you call them on it, it's an act of war.

That's how I got my job.
My boss found out I had loaded windows on my apple II.
The Apple II I built from scratch.
Needless to say, although I'm grateful for the job,
Being customer service for a software publishing company that leases tools is frustrating, if not ironic.

But I don't mind the money.

Most people see Asian as being one race and never think of the cultures being different, much less their languages. (new window) . That said, yes, the R and L thing is especially stupid considering the Chinese are perfectly fine with it.

As someone who speaks Chinese...yes, they do. The L an R sound in Chinese is very, very similar and easy to confuse.

Also, was anyone else expecting the rest of that headline to be something about a Japanese person building a girlfriend for $125?

Maybe in some of the dialects. Not in Mandarin. L and R are perfectly distinct.

Yes, in Mandarin. Granted, in some regions the distinction is greater than others, but "perfectly" distinct surely not.

When you consider that Foxconn only hires employees in perfect health in their 20's, purposely excluding those that are suffering from terminal illnesses, old age, or depression, the suicide rate is incredibly high*.

*also excluding the nets they have outside the windows to catch all of the jumpers

My late grandmother-in-law, who only spoke mandarin, could never pronounce my name, Drew. I don't speak any Chinese beyond 1, 2, 3, but I'm guessing there is no 'dr' sound?

Is that why Foxconn employees have to sign a contract stating they won't kill themselves, Twinkle Toes?

And I'm sure it was 1/4 the usability of an iPad.

A co-worker just came back from China. He said he saw a tablet that had an iPad shell but an Android OS on it. Said he was able to talk the guy down in price to $100 and would have bought it there wasn't so much lag when testing the software.

Just in case some here don't know... That works out to $125, if you take the chinese money spent and purchase USD. That doesn't mean it cost $125 to build it; China deliberately devalues its currency so that bringing money IN to China is fiscally sound but taking it OUT is not.

Or has love lost its creative power over here in the West?

No, we've just got a mainstream tech media that does farking nothing but report about farking iProducts.

I'd like to see 1, just 1 farking article in something like CNET about the stuff that's being done with 3d printing or arduino boards. Not pre-packaged Apple gadgets, or how many copies of Angry Birds are being sold or Black Friday.

I'm sure that the Jan edition of Make will have tech valentines.

Actually, he loaded Windows 7 on it. So it probably only has 20/4 the usability of an iPad.
