Ah the 1970's. The decade where the ME Generation learned to push everything down the road, because "Who cares! We got drugs and this is America!". It's a good thing their kids were raised by their grandparents and got some sense of community in them.

For all of you kiddies who wondered why Gen Xers are such assholes, this is what we were born into.

Mentat: For all of you kiddies who wondered why Gen Xers are such assholes, this is what we were born into.

No, Gen Xers were born into a time when a concerted, successful effort was made to clean that sh*t up. If you believe they're assholes, it must be for different reasons.

Assholes are assholes, regardless of generation.

Nice set of pictures.

uh... not quite. a lot of that toxic sludge was due to weak environmental legislation. and if the current GOP had its way, we'd be right back there.

I was in college when these pics were taken. When we drove anywhere near the area in pic #3 (the old Republic Steel coke plants), no matter how hot it was, we'd have to close the windows and hold our breath. It'd take 20 minutes to clear up again. That area now is a big-box retail area.

How is it possible, that burning a huge pile or car batteries could ever seem like a good idea?

Also, I imagine we're still regularly burning car batteries. We just do it in China, or some poor African nation these days.

Sadly, that's probably true.

The staggering thing to me is all the anti-regulation morons like Reason magazine, who consider any and all regulation to be bad.

They're literally so incompetent or blindingly partisan that they can't or won't even acknowledge how f*cking awful that would be.

Oh, the wind will blow the smoke away and it'll dissipate. Once it's invisible, that means it can't hurt anymore. Right?

It's a lovely straw man you've built here, shame if anything were to happen to it.

There is a line between enough regulation and over-regulation. That line is debatable, but it does exist. Just because you think that heavy industry has been regulated out of existence in the US doesn't mean they should be allowed to work with impunity.

I had a professor a couple decades back who had consulted with a company that was trying to re-purpose an old coastal Oregon plant into a facility to support factory fish farming (IIRC, it had to do with shellfish) The owner ended up in the middle of a pissing match between OSHA and the EPA, with one agency demanding that he do one thing before they would issue permits and the other telling him to do the exact opposite. After nearly a year of delays, and with no end in site, he sold the property and moved the plant to Japan.

Some regulations are good, even needed. So many that you can run afoul of different parts of the government by following directions from another part? Bad.

Not willing to believe the law of supply & demand, most of the "shortages" were caused by mandatory price ceilings imposed by state governments.

So, you agree that those who would abolish regulations altogether are nuts. Good to hear.

Ah, the 1970's. Let's see ...
Mother died from being born black and having to go to the hospital
Cousins died in Vietnam, those who returned either became junkies and died, or just killed themselves
Great Grandmother died from a stroke (she taught me how to play guitar. I'm a professional musician because of her)
Gas shortage, energy crisis, Son of Sam, Green River Killer, riots every summer, the aforementioned polyester suits
Studio 54, Frank Lucas, Guy Pierce, heroin epidemic in NYC, Times Square being awash with used needles, condoms and porn shops

yeah, thanks for reminding me.

Great link, subby btw.

First thing I thought was that I would like to see some after pictures of the same spots and also the fact that there are no fatties. And that kids would be allowed to play outside and the boys in the bed-stuy pics are ripped.

We still have mandatory government price control, such as rent control and minimum wage.
