They fixed the headline.

It used to say "swin" instead of "swine".

My crappy joke was going to be "is that like the swan flu, but in the present tense?"

But as usual the powers-that-be of Fark have ruined everything.

Tell me about it.

Did I say they "fixed" the headline? I meant they raped it.

All kidding aside, you really don't want it. I had it and it was a week of suckage.

I'm having a hard time being cavalier about a flu strain that once killed 50 to 100 million people (new window). Yeah, as with most things, we'll probably be fine. However, this situation has kind of a bad "worst-case scenario" attached to it.

2011-11-26 01:12:42 PM
There are two possible outcomes:

Preventative measures aren't enough, lots of people get sick, and everyone goes "What the crap CDC, why didn't you do more?"

Or

Preventative measures work, not many people get sick, and everyone goes "What the crap CDC, this was overblown, you're full of it."

I like that they included a pic in the article of what the new swine flu looks like. That way I can keep an eye out for it.

Maybe one is responding to an occurring situation and the other is trying to do something about something that may or may not occur. And in effect make profits for pharmaceutical corporations.

You can't blame the CDC for the outbreak of a disease. Or the prevention of it. That's ludicrous. They are a response unit. Supposed to be. Added the "and prevention" thing later. But without powers of prophecy....good luck with that.

This. I had it last year... it is worse than the regular flu. It knocks you off your feet for a week, but even when you're "better" for another week you still feel absolutely drained/exhausted.

The wife was on Chemo and got it - she nearly died - many days in the hospital. The kid had the swine flu shot but picked it up anyway - he spent the week in bed sleeping with me checking on him every couple of hours. I had the vaccine you inhale - it never touched me.

Went through the swine flu (Got to experience the new sensation that was rocking the nation), and it sucked. Thankfully, post-swine flu, I laughed at all those who contracted it in my wake.

Of course, fat lot of good it does getting immunity to that generation of swine flu, when the next one will lay waste to my immune system come February.

The 1918 pandemic had a few circumstances that made it somewhat a unique situation. This strain will probably be like most non-annual flus--it will kill more elderly and infants than usual, and it will make more young adults sick than usual, but not really enough to panic about.

That being said, it sucks hard. So wash your hands before you touch your face and before eating, and cough into your elbow. Flu isn't really airborne--it's mostly spread by touching fomites that someone sick touched before you.

This and that. Mine lasted two full weeks with a slight break in the fever sometime in the middle. I cracked a rib from coughing and when I caught a cold a week later, every sneeze felt like I was being stabbed.

Not this shiat again. Look I know you're going to find this astounding but we've upgraded our infrastructure and health care just a tad since the early 1900's.

You know things like indoor plumbing being readily available so you can wash your hands, anti-viral medicines, vaccinations, full belief in the germ theory of disease.

You're talking about an epidemic that happened when there was a buy in to eating Corn Flakes to stop from beating off. Think about that for just a little bit. People got sick in the 1920's they might go "out to the country for some air".

This. I really think it's unfair (and incorrect) to scream about how the WHO and CDC exaggerated the last Swine Flu pandemic event. Things actually worked properly likely because of the steps taken and awareness raised by the CDC and WHO. Of course, if this last one had killed millions, I'm sure you'd find some people saying the WHO and CDC should be de-funded because they're worthless.

I think we all know that another mega-outbreak of a highly-virulent event is going to happen, it's just unknown when it's going to happen.

Dirty smelly hippies aren't that major a vector because the smell keeps non-dirty hippies away.
