Huh. Almost the entirety of that article was just another form of, "Ha ha! Hippies are dirty, do drugs, and they smell! Ha ha! And they're all privileged kids who are skipping school and work and are uneducated and don't have jobs! Ha ha!"

The author doesn't seem like a total asshole/moron, but he describes what he was filming through a VERY ideologically-fixed lens. Makes you wonder what he left out because it didn't fit his narrative (which you described to a tee).

At any rate he clearly has little to no interest in actually comprehending the motivations or goals of OWS, or the reasons why the group is so diverse (hint: both suburban school kids and dreadlocked hippies would like to see a better future with less economic desperation).

This. Cherry picked photos for sure, meant to make a political point.

Yeah, the more I read, the more I want to support OWS.

Take this gem:

The right to live ones' life, in privacy and Freedom, in whatever way one wants, so long as others are not harmed, should be a sacred principal in a Democracy. - H. Zinn

Marxist-Leninist Howard Zinn's toxic People's History of the United States reads like 1940s Stalinist anti-American propaganda, and is widely revered by the left. Zinn's quote on this sign sounds like the hippy credo of the 1960s. Who is it that determines in anarchy, what constitutes harm?

Yes...those 1940s Stalinist hippies. What the fark am I reading?

It's funny...I didn't read any of the text. I just looked at the pictures. I got a totally different impression than the guy who wrote the article did, cause then I started reading, and it could be summed up (big surprise) as,

"Lazy smelly dirty diseased trust-fund rapist hippies, why don't the cops sweep this filthy disgusting subhuman vermin off the streets for breaking the law?"

A quote:

"Mommy and daddy entertain tourists, for cash, by simulating sexual positions with a bronze statue. Note the excited man with camera giving the thumbs up in the background.

This famous statue is of a business man, sitting in a park with briefcase open, head bowed as he works. It survived the collapse of the World Trade Center, at which time this area was covered in several feet of debris."

The statue survived the collapse of the WTC! Buried under several feet of debris! Let us bow down to the blessed statue! 9-11! Business! Capitalim! Degraded by homeless scum! Outrage!

I'm convinced. Screw these hippies and give more tax cuts to the rich.

He blames the" harm done by the counter-culture movement of the 1960s ". Has anybody ever actually met a republican who wasn't still in an all out rage over the 1960s? Which was OVER 50 YEARS AGO and not relevent to anybody under 55 !!!!

Idiots.

No, no, no, we're past the "then they make fun of you" stage, we're at the "then they attack you" stage. Get with the program, buddy.

That said, nice photos, and there is a certain of element of truth in the "let's party like it's 1968" observation. However, he was scrupulously careful not to post photos of the middle-aged protesters who've lost their jobs and homes, the ones with nothing better to do than protest at OWS because the system has chewed them up and spit them out, or are in the middle of having that done to them. You know, the 99%.

I'll give you that, but personally I'd have it no other way. And that includes the tea party freaks as well.

I can't speak for others, but most of my ideals were formed of viewing the extremes on all angles. It's from there where most of us who go through life in a more moderate tack form our guideposts. It's healthy really and good for us all.

Also, I've always said to those that belittle activists, that is everything was all fine and good to begin with that would take care of most of the "activist problem" right there.

So, equality and an emphasis on main street is an 'extreme' position? That would mean the centrist position is moar corporatism, just with nominal work towards helping the middle class. I don't think that's the centrist position at all, at least based on polls. The problem is that these people are taking pretty rational positions and making them look like the fringe.

My, what an even and impartial read. It evoked Edward R. Murrow, did it not? Breathtaking in it's expertly composed, highly rational, and wholly objective descriptions and conclusions.

Oh wait a minute. No it's not. It's a pile of shiat. Sorry, got carried away there.

I liked the pictures, and the text went mean pretty quickly. It's a shame. If the author had taken the time to actually describe what was going on and give a fair assessment this could have been a decent piece. Actually, the author has decent writing skills, I'd like to see what he can do when he's not being a dick.

I agree. The fringe is attracted to these events. That, I think, is something that will always have to be reckoned with.

I remember the first Earth Day parade in Bloomington, IN (IU) back in 1990. The obvious theme for the day was many rational positions on dealing with waste, recycling and pollution on both a local and global level. Of course there were all these other issues tagging along for the ride (NORML and opposition to US involvement w/ Israel come immediately to mind) that had nothing to do with sorting your glass and cans or driving less, etc.

So, if this blogger were around in B-town in 1990 he'd probably have taken pictures of these folk as well, while ignoring the school teachers educating people on general conservation and the majority of common sense going on at the same time.

Your average teatard thinks eliminating corporate income taxes would be a righteous thing and can't comprehend the massive competitive advantage it would bestow on multinational corporations over small businesses.

A statue is a statue is a statue. Because it happened to be in the WTC doesn't make it special.

The blogger was implying that goofing around on THAT statue was some sort of blasphemy against America, rather than just, y'know, people goofing around.

"A large percentage of OWS participants are 9/11 truthers, or followers of Alex Jones, who on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 led a howling mob of thousands to Ground Zero to scream insults at the families of victims of the 9/11 attacks. I encountered a number of truthers who had come to New York on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 to demonstrate at Ground Zero, and stayed to join the Occupy Wall Street movement on September 17."

well that explains why the top vote getter for the OWS demands is to re-open the 9/11 investigation.

the Alliance for Global Justice gets a 7% cut of all donations to OWS just for letting the hippies use their tax exempt status?!

Yeah me neither. There's a couple I know that never met a conspiracy theory they didn't like -- I could imagine them making a sign like that.

I've drifted away from hanging out with them. It's really insufferable sometimes to have a lot of that stuff pushed on you and have to politely smile and nod your head.

They discovered the internet a little later than a lot of us, and I think they just went headlong into finding out "the real truth" and couldn't gobble that shiat up fast enough.

Pieman, Aron Kay, is another professional protester, famous on the left since the days of Berkeley's Free Speech movement. His role, as a Yippie in that movement, was to popularize throwing pies in the faces of speakers with whom the flower-power Marxists of that time disagreed. This human pig-man has done more to shut down free speech in this country than any one I know of.
