And the rest of the nation yawned and switched back to football.

Fark you, NBA haters! I'm happy!!

2011-11-26 07:23:34 AM
Well, crap. I've been thoroughly enjoying SportsCenter without it.

2011-11-26 07:27:35 AM
I hate pro ball, but I was worried to see what would happen to college ball if it folded.

betona: Well, crap. I've been thoroughly enjoying SportsCenter without it.

This!

Although, to be fair, at least the people who depend on the NBA such as the arena employees and food vendors will be able to get back to work. Personally, I was hoping the NHL would start getting attention if the season was cancelled, but alas twas not to be.

/Go Winterhawks!

How was the union able to negotiate after they disclaimed interest?

2011-11-26 07:36:10 AM
I'm glad at least some people realized that playing chicken with each other was hurting everyone. Here's to hoping that those who work in the basketball arenas are able to get to work soon, and that all parties squabbling over money remember this whole saga the next time. A few million dollars isn't worth seeing your professional league go down in flames.

SnarfVader: And the rest of the nation yawned and switched back to football.

Americans enjoy sports that are a microcosm of their lives. The most popular professional league in the country is defined by unpredictable elements merging to form total mediocrity. Meanwhile, the league defined by highly-skilled individuals is a comparatively niche product. Pretty much sums up the overweight American experience.

Until the deal has been voted on, there is no deal

There is still hope.

Not to mention parking lot owners/attendants, local and even slightly less local restaurants, fundraisers involving tickets, even the network scrubs at all these places that work on it all behind the scenes are currently out two months of semi-steady work. And I'm sure most of the league-organized charity work went undone while this was going on.

\was nice that CSN New England was playing classic Celts on what would have been game nights
\\wonder if there's a chance in hell of me getting tickets to see them now?

Please don't deprive me of two months of playoffs. Endless excitement!

INeedAName: I hate pro ball, but I was worried to see what would happen to college ball if it folded.

The college players would have to find somewhere else to play and as a result, the level of rec league play all around the country would plummet.

Oh. It's one of those threads where people confuse "single elimination format" with "high level of play". How typical.

I'd love to see what the deal looks like. Also, I want to know why so many people seemed to blame the players for the lockout. Mostly, I'm glad to have my NBA back.

/cuz 2k12 wasn't going to cut it, I haven't played for a year, picked it up on Steam and I farking suck at it.
//Now the hockey fans come in and talk about how they don't give a fark about basketball which is funny because in reality nobody gives a fark about hockey

66 game season starting Dec. 25?

...so the NBA finals are going to be in August?

....Actually, I'm okay with that. Summer is kind of a lull for sports (fark baseball), why not push basketball three months forward. Or better yet, have it start after football (which it does at the highschool/collegiate level anyway).

2011-11-26 08:40:02 AM
It's going to be fascinating to me to find out the details of this deal, assuming it does get finalized. From everything you heard, the owners weren't going to negotiate so much as they were going to offer up a new deal that was even more in their favor. And the players weren't having it.

Who folded?

2011-11-26 08:44:52 AM
Dammit, now several of the 8 minutes per month I watch SportsCenter will be taken up by the goddamn NBA.

2011-11-26 08:48:48 AM
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted...

funny i read that has rapers gonna rape.

i'm glad that they could reach a deal so that they can go back to shaking down taxpayers and cities...i feel like we were missing a great opportunity to give more money to douchenozzle while ignoring other vital public projects.

/fark the nba, fark stern
//fark any pro sports that demand public money (packers excluded)

Lost Thought 00: Doesn't basketball normally start in late December?

no, it starts in mid-april. just after the ncaa tournament ends. i believe the nba calls the start of the season "the first round." not sure where that name came from.

That should tell you something about this country's interest in hockey if the only way the sport has a minimal chance of getting any attention is if another is on lockdown.

I think it's a riot that hockey highlights on sportscenter are just filler at the end of the show to have it make up the full one hour time slot

I'm willing to bet people can name the last 10 super bowl champs and I'm also willing to bet more than half the country already forgot who won the cup last year

Hmm, guess I'll have to prepare for the Pacers sales guy. I'll probably buy a 1/2 package again if I can get him down to $25/ticket in the lower section. Attendance is so bad here I move down and sit 3 rows behind Larry Bird for most games. No idea how they stay afloat, even with the 10mil/year subsidy our dumbass city pays them.

Not interested in a settlement unless it includes a lifetime ban of LeBron from the NBA.

Do you think it's necessary to have a 7-game series between a 70-12 team and a 41-41 team? Do you think half the league is required to truly determine the best team in the league?

2011-11-26 10:13:23 AM
At least there won't be an uptick in crime when the players go back to doing the only other thing they're good at.

Starting with Knicks v Celtics? This will be the greatest Christmas ever.

There is one major reason I've never liked the NBA in 30 years of being older than 8...the short shot clock and the ridiculous frequency with which teams score over 100 points. It's a terrible product. Watching the NBA for basketball would be like having an NFL where 11 offensive players take the field versus 8 or 9 defensive players. WOOO! Another touchdown! And another! And another! And another! And another! ...

. . . and everyone will be out with hammies by the end of January.

You do realize there was, like, a 10 year span in the late 90s/early 00s where scoring was really low and it was a problem for the league. The Nash-led Suns brought it back.

You're right. Nothing has happened in the NFL over the past decade or two that has slanted things in favor of...say...the passing game. Nothing at all.

And nothing happened in the last 2 decades which increased scoring in baseball or anything - remember the late-90s with all those 1-0 games and bunting and stuff?
