You have to pay to park there. The machine sells little tickets which you put in the window so they don't clamp/tow you.

The machine sells parking tickets. So called pay and display machines. You buy them and stick them in your dashboard. Occasionally a warden turns up and checks cars. If your car doesn't have a ticket or it's expired you get a parking fine.

I expect the person is some over 55 fart who got a parking fine in the past, took it personally and has decided to wage war on the things. Given the cost of the devices it would probably be a good idea to train some CCTV on them and the immediate access points until the moron is caught.

Ha! That gave me a mental image of the town speakers blaring the 1812 Overture, and each time a cannon blast is called for, a parking machine blows up somewhere down the main street.


I can see the hatred. These things are worse than standard parking meters, in that you can't just show up at a space and sap off some unused time (unless the guy vacating the space is kind enough to hand you a ticket with some time left on it as he's leaving.) They have even more insidious ones that have loop sensors under the parking spaces and, when they are vacated, the meter instantly resets to zero.

Back in the 70s my father and his fraternity brothers got tired of NYC putting up parking meters in the residential neighborhood that their frat house was in. Being a frat of engineers they hatched a plan, gathered up a few blowtorches, and proceeded to remove every single meter on the residential streets and dump them in the east river, saving a couple as trophies. The city never replaced most of them, and you can see where they used to stand, melted metal and all, 35 years later.

Yeah, the photo they used in the article looks like it's been hit by a truck to me.. the dent up top is bent inward towards the way it fell. Also, it's been ripped up out of the concrete, all without any burn marks.

In Manhattan they have these things, and when you put in coins, the machine says "not enough money" (aparently the $3/HR rate is the minimum) then you try a credit card and it says "sorry can't read card." then you get a ticket for $175

So yeah the city is making much more money now that they got rid of standard parking meters.

I haven't considered blowing one up, but I have thought about Photoshopping my own tickets.
