Did he lose his $100 hand cart?

They really hedge about the word "quicksand" in this article, like they're afraid of someone telling them their definition is technically wrong.

I always carry a beacon and rescue insurance when I'm in the wild.

Not surprising about the Florida thing. The 601st AOC is based out of Tyndall in Panama City - they're responsible for the airspace over the entire US

All he had to do was pull his legs out with his arms. And then pull his arms out with his teeth.

Do all rescue beacons have that kind of range? If not, I really want to know what brand he was using.

Is quicksand a real thing? I don't think so.

As a 24 year vet on the Air Force, I can tell you that they do not deserve a Florida Tag. They just happen to be located there, they are not representative of that fricken state.

In other words, emergency beacon system works. I'm okay with that.

Farking SPOT beacons, how do they work?

ThisNameSux: Do all rescue beacons have that kind of range? If not, I really want to know what brand he was using.

More likely than not it was sending a signal to satellites which triangulate the signal and send the info to the command center.

You know, they just don't have quicksand in movies like they used to. Back in the b&w days of motion pictures it seems every other movie someone was getting stuck in quicksand. Now...not so much.

All Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) have that kind of range.

I carry this one when hiking/flying:

Being VERY FAMILIAR with the "area", quicksand is problematic. Mud made from caliche dust far more likely and brother, you don't wanna mess with that shiat.

Mmmmmmmmm, I love quicksand and mud, wish I'd been in his position.

I'd liken this "quicksand" moreso to the mudflats of Alaska... I've messed around on the land next to them before and thought people were over exaggerating about not being able to get out if you fall in. So I stuck one of my shoes into the mud just enough to break the surface and it has very strong suction power. My foot slipped out of my shoe and I had to pull it out with my hands

"at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday evening, the Richfield Communications Center received (the alert)."
"The victim was pulled out of the mud around 2 a.m. after approximately eight hours."

That reporter's math teachers must be crying right now.

Isn't it possible that the amount of time it took the rescue personnel to respond and arrive at the scene was figured in?

As the headline states, the rescue beacon was initially answered a Florida Air Force station, who in turn contacted the Richfield Communications Center in Utah. I doubt that happened instantaneously.
