Isn't deep fried donuts the same as saying boiled hard boiled eggs?

You shut your mouth about soup dumplings.

How do you say "You sound fat" in Wu and Mandarin?

Excuse me while I mop the drool off my desk.

...

Okay, back.
If you don't have the opportunity to wander around Shanghai to find these, we're happy to have you in Vancouver for the closest thing to real Shanghainese. Richmond Public Market and Crystal Mall have incredible Shanghainese stalls including some that do insane mantou and rou jia mo, and xiao long bao are pretty solid at a lot of local spots. Lots of food blogs local to Vancouver cover this stuff.

/Peaceful Restaurant on Broadway = great XLB and Shanghai-style noodles
//Long's over on Main is pretty damn good too

So hungry now...

I had the egg tarts once. Lost a lot of friends that day.

I think that's what i loved most about Vancouver and the Richmond area, it reminded me a lot of Hong Kong.

the headline is a little misleading though, you wouldn't find a lot of that stuff on a traditional dim sum menu.

Cong You Bing, fark yeah. Living in the south was torture since they don't have a clue in the world how to make those properly.

Also, the tofu flower soup looks a lot like what we used to call Salty Soy Milk (har, har, yeah) in Taiwan. If you ever get a chance, also try the steamed tofu dessert with ginger sugar sauce. Has to be fresh though.

I worked in Richmond for 6 years and now I cannot stand dim sum. I OD'd and did nto recover.

I can still eat at Hons though.

The Shanghai noodles with spicy XOXO beef is the best.

Daaaayaaam. I lived next to Boston's Chinatown for ten years about 20 years ago. All the restaurant owners got to know me and would serve me "delicacies". The best I remember was spiced fried tofu cakes with a fish eyeball in each one.

Alas, I'm now in Raleigh. There's no good Chinese food to be had, even the cafes at the Asian markets are lousy.

OTOH: Indian cuisine here rocks

I just realized that there is a place where all the food is the kind of stuff you go looking for post drinking.

Well, they did have a hand in serving up the first Thanksgiving.

Living in Honolulu, I'm developing a deep love for dim sum!! The best XLB here is at Ming's Chinese in Kalihi ... And I skip the red vinegar and use black vinegar instead: Potent!!

Chicken feet and deep fried chicken knees are full of win too. I'm up for trying anything!!

I love the soup dumplings in Din Tai Fong in Bellevue but it's stupid pricy and the wait time is like an hour at best. My friends paid for me as I had gone ahead and bought their movie tickets for the movie we were watching earlier that day.

Tomorrow, me and my sis are gonna try to find some dim sum tomorrow. I hunger for shumei

lol, my little sister is outside Shanghai, she has stayed sick for the past few months, unless she cooks for herself she gets sick.

Be careful with the dumplings. You never know what's inside those things.

But that's not really a Shanghai thing. That's more of a Gongzhao/HK style food.

I just got back from China. I had some really, really good food and some ok food and a little bit of blah food. We were warned to be wary about the street food, but we had no problems. I am allergic to shellfish, so I had to be a little extra careful, but even then we had no problems. The only meal I ate that made me feel queasy afterwards was at The Peace Hotel on the Bund.

Had to re read Subbys intro, I thought it said "egg farts". Whew, glad I was wrong.

You can make your own egg farts at home:

2-6 eggs, hard boiled
1 dog

Peel eggs. Feed to dog. Wait.
