As for leather -- if the animal is going to be used for food, the less wasted the better. The animal is still dead, I know, but at least in one case it's not being done solely for its hide.

Well to be honest the furry little rodents don't have much meat in them so its not even worth d-boning them for the meat.

And some people eat them that want to make the effort.

Considering the numerous animals killed in greater numbers to eat and clothe us then it seems pretty hypocritical to piss and moan about fur yet not be a vegan.

Fur, as a luxury item, is retarded. Fur as a fantastic natural resource that produces long-lasting, high-quality garments, on the other hand, is not. Nobody uses fur for that, though, so it's not really worth talking about.

We use fur as a signifier of conspicuous consumption, properly treated animal fur is warm, durable, and handles water well. Billions of years of evolution have ensured that fur is the best protective layer it can be. It's a very practical material that can be prepared with simple technology and isn't intimately dependent upon a vast industrial complex (synthetics, on the other hand, are- and also usually involve heavy use of petrochemicals). There's a reason Canada exists, and a big part of it was its capacity to export furs a few hundred years ago.

Definitely. Beaver fur could be managed as part of a game-management process as well- there are areas where beaver populations need careful management. Minks, on the other hand, aren't worth it. I have to wonder about how guinea-pig fur would work out- they're meaty enough to be a food animal.
