At this point, he is just goading them into more rhetorical excess. It's the same strategy behind his absence in the titanic conflicts in Congress. He wants them to make complete asses of themselves, and they are.

The rest of that headline was entirely unnecessary.

Yeah, but if that standard was upheld, the Politics tab would just be line after line of Republicans upset because Obama.

And just think how much of value would be lost.

Well, I suppose he could have mentioned Ganesha or Vishnu.

Imagine all of the jobs that could have been created with the simple mention of God. Thanks for nothing, Fartbongo.

Thanksgiving is Christianity's fifth highest holiday, after Christmas, Easter, Good Friday and the Fourth of July. Of course an atheist Muslim like 0bama is going to try to secularize it. I'm just glad this clown is a almost out of office and we can elect a good strong conservative Christian to set this country straight!

2011-11-25 12:20:55 AM
No Tom Servo? I am outraged.

2011-11-25 12:23:31 AM
Yeah, Heavens forbid he try to be inclusive and respectful to ALL Americans, some of whom do not believe in or worship God...

2011-11-25 12:25:30 AM
I'd joking say that Republicans should make this an election issue, but the average Christian is so whiny and somehow so oppressed that they'd actually take the time to be offended by this if the GOP told them they should.

2011-11-25 12:26:32 AM
God didn't seem to mind.

He didn't mention Buddha or Amaterasu either. My Kraut-Mick-Nip self is offen--oh wait, no I'm not. Because my own faith doesn't need validation from someone I've never met...

Exactly. If he had mentioned God, there'd be some noise about how he wasn't sincere enough, or he wasn't explicitly making it be the Christian God, or whatever the hell else.

Meanwhile though, he did mention the military, which is the proper Patriotically Correct thing to do for the past however many years now, so it couldn't have been ALL bad.

ManateeGag: Thanksgiving is a Christian holiday?

Why not? They celebrate Festivus and Ostra.

2011-11-25 12:56:02 AM
They followed the traditional pardoning of the White House Turkey with a visit to a local food bank to distribute food packages, accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia.

Selfish assholes, not mentioning God in the address! What kind of values are they teaching those children??

2011-11-25 12:56:36 AM
Um. to be fair to the admittedly lunatic GOP, the article only quotes one guy's tweet and doesn't even identify him as a Republican. While that man is an idiot showing disrespect to the Constitution and, in my opinion, his faith, I can't get too upset about some outraged Okie.

I'll wait for O'Reilly.

ManateeGag: Thanksgiving is a Christian holiday?

Ok so not the holiday per se, but this holiday also has a strong theme of pagans had something first but then the christians took it in the name of their lord.

2011-11-25 01:00:23 AM
Bad idea, pilgrim.

ManateeGag: Thanksgiving is a Christian holiday?

Indirectly. Arguably, it's more a holy day of the American civil religion, which includes some elements derived from (and sometimes consistent with) Christianity; and, in so far as the Tea Party are ACR fundamentalists, the complaints makes some anthropological sense.

Philosophically... yeah, it's easiest to write off the whiners as a pack of ignorant idiots.

Of course they are because Thanksgiving and the United States are only for supernaturalists, and preferably, Christian supernaturalists.

Great, the christians are claiming thanksgiving too?

What idiots.

Thanksgiving is an ancient Pagan ritual.

when did Thanksgiving turn into a Chrstian holiday? Isn't it a celebration of the nation, most commonly depicted as a multi-cultural, multi-religious gathering? Making it Christian seems kind of antithetical to the whole idea.

2011-11-25 05:01:23 AM
I'm just pleased as punch.

With every ~outrage~ they further alienate the rest of society that's starting to realize they've been wasting their time even considering these fruitcakes' opinions.

God wanted us to drive these savage "native" creatures out, and make room for witch-burning, bible-thumping, wife-slapping white people.

Duh.

Sorry, meant to specify "King-James-Edited-Bible-thumping".
If you believe the current Amerikan translation as anything close to the original collection of stories, you are a moron.

Of course thanksgiving is a christian holiday. Here in Australia, we celebrate it by throwing digeridoos at bandicoots and singing cold chisel songs intersparsed with hymns. Actually, it started with the Lutherans back in Germany when Martin Luther King nailed the Emancipation Proclamation onto the church door, thereby freeing the Jews.

2011-11-25 05:35:28 AM
He should have been inclusive, but mention Allah first, God second, ....

However the right would eventually accuse him of vote-rigging because a fair number of the right-wing base would have died from apoplexy and strokes.

I'm reading over some of the older presidential Thanksgiving addresses now. Almost all of them mention God, even President Obama's addresses from 2009, 2010, and hey, wait a minute:

As we gather in our communities and in our homes, around the table or near the hearth, we give thanks to each other and to God for the many kindnesses and comforts that grace our lives. Let us pause to recount the simple gifts that sustain us, and resolve to pay them forward in the year to come.

How the fark is that not mentioning God? It must not be batshiat crazy fundie enough or something.

I have it on good authority that Jeebus made the pies at the first Tday. An apple crumb, I believe.

God mentioned in the 2011 Thanksgiving Proclamation, too. (new window)

The Last Supper, eh?

CayceP: How the fark is that not mentioning God?

There is a difference between Obama's short 2011 Thanksgiving ADDRESS where he did not mention God and Obama's 2011 Thanksgiving PROCLAMATION where he does, though many of the screaming rightards fail to make this distinction.
