Pitzer clutched his 12 gauge shotgun. If the UFO turned hostile, Pitzer was ready to say 'Welcome to Earf' with a couple of rounds of buckshot.

Its sad that if it actually was an alien commandeering his space buggy to earth that he more than likely would have been killed by an ignorant redneck with a shotgun. Totally ruining our chances for him to teach us anything.

That's when I noticed the JP Aerospace sticker on it."

If it has an identification sticker, it's not exactly "unidentified".

The universe is so huge that it is highly improbable that aliens could contact us, unless their evolution started a few million years before humans emerged. Since travel would take so long that in order to get to earth they would have to travel such great distances that their technology would have to be so advanced as to allow faster-than-light travel. Which is something we probably won't see for another 40,000 years.

Part of the joke was shooting it with the camera, not the shotgun. See he's a redneck and all rednecks shoot first. See.

What kind of explorer advanced enough to get here wouldn't have the sense or capability to defend itself from an aborigine with a combustion powered projectile weapon?

And how would they know to come here? Unless they randomly stumble upon Earth, how would they know about life in this system?

rebelyell2006: And how would they know to come here? Unless they randomly stumble upon Earth, how would they know about life in this system?

I like to remind people that just because we don't know how to do something, doesn't make it impossible. Flight was impossible, a train travelling more than 30mph was impossible, a computer fitting in the palm of your hand was impossible, flying to space was impossible. The list goes on and on. Yes, faster than light travel or generating enough energy to fold space is something we can't currently do, but that doesn't make it impossible.

If an advanced intelligence existed they would probably know a few more things than us about astronomy, physics and harnessing energy.

FTA: Turns out, the flying object had been launched under helium balloons, two hours earlier, 50 miles away. The high altitude balloon platform was carrying science experiments to the edge of space. One of the two helium balloons burst, and the craft fell slowly back to earth.

Oh come on! Do you really expect anyone to believe that? WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

hmmm my guess would be if they have the technology to master interstellar flight they probably have sensors or some doohicky to detect semi intelligent lifeforms on a planet. heck we've been broadcasting radio signals for over a hundred years.... it's probably not difficult for some advance beings to pick up these signals and determine where the source originated from.

Kind of hard to have a million year evolution head start when you only have 4000 years to work with. Thats like saying Jimmy Johnston could win the Indy 500 if he started with a 10000 lap head start

Radio signal triangulation?

If we've been sending out signals for a few thousands years I could see it but since those signals are not instantaneous, it would still take a long time for radio waves (or any sort of energy/particle signals) to reach areas that are possibly inhabited. And that still does not take into consideration travel time to get to here.

JPL is launching this on Saturday:

JP Aerospace launches these:

They're cool but there are orders of magnitude difference between the two.

As someone pointed out earlier, he "shot" it with a camera, just it was "shooting" him.

As the "getting a kick out of..." saying goes, I grew up in Auburn, have seen wierd things in the sky in the Nevada desert while armed.....freak out!

My brother-in-law thinks there seems to be a lot less photos of Bigfoot and UFOs and such now that everyone has cell phone cameras.
