Which bbc series is this from? A while back I got the complete Life series narrated by Attenborough on bluray and its the best media purchase i've ever made. I'd love to know what this is from.

From TFA

The unusual phenomenon was filmed for the first time by cameramen Hugh Miller and Doug Anderson for the BBC One series Frozen Planet.

You'll have to download it if you want to watch the whole thing (I believe it's on the Discovery Channel in the US) because the final episode is deemed too controversial for American viewing

CSB Time: I actually got to spend the day with the videographers, Hugh and Doug when I was working in Antarctica. I spent one day as their dive tender while they were filming this. I assisted with moving dive equipment and fishing their cameras in and out of the water. It was one of the neatest experiences of my life. They were all very friendly. Doug and I spent much of the day talking about Scottish music. I can't wait to see this series!

That is the coolest bit of science I've seen recently. Something completely unexpected until you think about the chemistry and physics and then it's obvious.

Pheed, I'm jealous. I still think those guys are nuts, but in a good way.

Well than hooray for global warming.

This is gonna be awesome on blu-ray. I've been watching in 720p HD (that's what it's transmitted in) upscaled to 1080p. Even in transmission quality HD it is in parts better than some of the Earth blu-rays.

Yeah. It's bullshiat. It's the final episode and Discovery won't air it. Which is weird because they own channels like Science and Planet Green.

I read a bit into this, it sounds like that when they were selling the series, they sold it as a six episode series, PLUS an option for a 7th episode and bonus material.

So I can see it being a bit more than just 'we can't risk pissing off our audience' but a bit more of, we didn't elect to purchase the mega-deluxe collector's edition.

This is what I found on why Discovery wont air it:

An episode of the BBC's Frozen Planet documentary series that looks at climate change has been scrapped in the U.S., where many are hostile to the idea of global warming.

British viewers will see all seven episodes of the multi-million-pound nature series throughout the Autumn. But U.S. audiences will not be shown the last episode, which looks at the threat posed by man to the natural world. It is feared a show that preaches global warming could upset viewers in the U.S., where around half of people do not believe in climate change.

The series of six episodes has been sold to 30 countries, including China, one of the world's biggest polluters.

[...] In the U.S., Frozen Planet is being aired by Discovery. They were involved in the joint-production of the series. Yet they are still refusing to accommodate Frozen Planet in its entirety.

The timing of a one-sided global warming programme could be particularly sensitive in the U.S., where climate change is an issue in the presidential race.

GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry accuses climate scientists of lying for money.

A poll earlier this year found that the majority of Americans believe that if climate change does exist, it is not caused by humans.

I'm pretty sure the last episode of Planet Earth was the same thing, and that aired just fine. I sure as hell know it's in my dvd set.

That was awesome. I love the way the narrator delivers it. It sounds like something from a graphic novel turned into a movie. "Winter is reaching down from the cold world above.... As it touches the seafloor it kills anything it touches, by encasing it, in a tomb of ice..."

2011-11-25 01:10:57 AM
Science: cool stuff.

Watched it Wednesday night. The whole series has been quite brilliant, and its the only thing I can be bothered to watch in HD. The in-nest shots of the newborn baby polar bear cubs and the wolf-v-bison battle were equally good.

I told Doug that he and Hugh were probably the most macho guys I'd ever met. I tried to avoid touching the water as much as possible that day. They were actually diving in it - and the temperature was below freezing. Doug responded "we're actually quite effeminate, really."

I wasn't aware of this series, but it looks like I'll be adding it to my collection with Planet Earth, Life, and Human Planet. Always the British versions, because of the perfect narration.
