Rent control law in NYC is very clear - you can only have it on your primary residence. I believe that's one of the things Chuck Rangel got in trouble for

He looks pretty Rich and Successful, surely he can afford it?

Bow chicka bowwow. Nice to see an adult get the feck out of his place, so the youth of the nation can shag a lady friend for days on end.

If he's temporarily living somewhere else than I wouldn't say he changed primary residence. Primary denotes permanence, not temporariness.

Does he have a mullet?

His rent would be lower if he didn't have to pay a deposit for that animal stuck on his face.

What a strange excuse to give for not living there.

I think the point is it isn't temporary.

Would you give it up with a guy like that in the room next to you? Especially when you're going at it and he starts calling out "Your squealing is too damn high!"

Ha. That guy lives in rent control? And artificially raising the cost of rent on everybody else in Manhatten, and he's the one complaining about rent prices?

There's no way that this guy is a real person.

He looks like he's wearing a not-particularly-convincing disguise, like in an Eddy Murphy or Martin Lawrence movie.

Makes perfect sense. If he moved to a more expensive apartment without rent control, and complained about the rent, that would not make sense.

Let's just say he comes across as quite "authentic."

Jeez, I worked with an elderly woman in Manhattan who'd had the same rent-controlled apartment since the 1930's or so. She was paying something like eighty bucks a month for rent. It was insane. She never complained, though she had people busting down her door all the time, begging to be put on the lease so they could take it over after she died.

It is self interest.
He's deferring the cost of his rent onto newer and younger arrivals to NYC that come for work and don't have the family/connections to get into a rent controlled apartment, and end up paying 50% of their income in rent for some bungalo in Brooklyn.

They he complains about his rent control and wants the government to make it lower? Fark him. I'm surprised his bullshiat was never called out before.

I don't think he was complaining about his rent, he pointedly said "the rent" not "my rent".

I dont get it. Why would anybody care if he is living in it or not? As long as he is paying the rent it shouldnt matter. That said, I know nothing about rent control, except that it is anti-capitalist, anti-American, socialism.

If he was so concerned about neighbors paying $2200 a month in rent he should lobby against rent control and give up his perks.

2011-11-24 06:39:40 PM
K, so I'm reading about this whole rent control thing... but if you're the property owner already, and it's basically paying the mortgage + condo fees + property taxes, aren't you still earning profit by just the sheer interest on the increase of value on the property itself?

That's mostly how my understanding of how it works where I'm renting.

I know that if it's in the case of a place that's paid off, it's usually close to the same amount.

So he should work against himself, why? If you were campaigning for voting rights should you give up voting? Were he to vacate his apartment, it would just be rented out to someone else for $2200/mo, how would that further his agenda?

If you come back to reality you'll easily see he advocating for stronger rent control, which benefits the few at the expense of the many. He's being selfish, plain and simple. He doesn't care about young people paying 2200 in Brooklyn. He cares about himself

ChuDogg: Ha. That guy lives in rent control? And artificially raising the cost of rent on everybody else in Manhatten, and he's the one complaining about rent prices?

It makes perfect sense when you understand the entitlement mentality. He believes others should be doing whatever they can to make life better for him, because he just deserves it. He doesn't feel ashamed taking handouts, or living off the sweat of others. He deserves it. And once you believe others owe you just by nature of you being alive, it's a small step to thinking they owe you more and more.

When he initially ran for office the article they ran then said he paid no rent because he did handyman work for the landlord in exchange for his apartment.

People were laughing at him for that. Now they're saying his apartment is rent controlled? Something's not right here...I'm thinking he's been dealing under the table with his landlord in a variety of ways and now that the landlord has two kids shacking it up and he's not fixing up the place for free he wants to evict the guy. If he's been staying in brooklyn he's probably not travelling to his own place, considering he's never had a vehicle and always been sorta broke.

He's already taken care of, stricter or extended rent control won't benefit him. He's an attention whore, I'll grant you that, but that attention is now threatening his situation.

Ok clearly you have no knowledge or connection to this issue. These people come out of the woodwork every time they propose a modest increase off 3 or 4 % increase in rent. They protest, strike, and threaten politicians who don't cave to them demands. All it does is push higher rents on everyone else, nobody deserves cheaper rent just because they are from the righ voting block or born to the right family.

SJKebab: What is the purpose of rent control? Is it government mandated or something? I don't get it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent_control (new window)

Long story. Generally starts with "evil landlord screws people over by overcharging them when a lease is up, because it's so inherently difficult to move, the way city life is, they're stuck with the place", then quickly becomes a mire of very high-dollar subjective legal questions and the place becomes a slum because there's no profit in upgrading the place. Can't raise the rent to match. And not all tenants need be rent-controlled, leaving the owner trying to shove the cost burden on those who aren't, and seeking to avoid tenants who would invoke rent-control rights.

And there's some absurd shiat there, where people are paying a pittance of the effective market value of the place. But it's sort of an opinion of what "market value" is when the other apartments have jacked up non-controlled rents in order to stay in business.
