I'm trying to figure out how subby feels after posting such an embarrassingly lame headline. Just typing the words "not yours" in a submission should be enough to make you want to kill yourself.

It does seem that subby should have tied Sandusky into the headline.
ie, Pa's creditors getting Sanduskied, or somethin'.
It's time for that state to get their own tag.

Insert standard batshiat crazy comment of !!!!regulations!!!!!!(by the EPA) caused this town to spend a 100 million dollars(?) to make sure that there are to be no 3 eyed asthmatic children downwind of the ancient garbage incinerator. As 3 eyes are better, especially if the extra eye is on the back of your head, to avoid being shivved by some friendly late night people. Baseball cap would have to be slightly modified. an eye in the forehead is a pain, since custom sunglasses would be needed.

/There must be a nice valley somewhere to dispose of all that garbage.....
/Ah yes, put garbage in valley and then explode off coal mountains top to cover.

From what I read, they are enjoying a huge natural gas boom, but chosse not to tax the drillers.

We have an impact tax. the drillers do well, the state does well and we pay all our bills

No, you can't have your PA tag. Not yours.

Harrisburg is a place that just looks dead whenever I drive by it. I really feel like it is a city of undeath. A necropolis whose few inhabitants are a mixture of zombies and morlocks.
/not subby either.

The city of Harrisburg is not the State of Pennsylvania. It's the city itself that is screwed up financially.

The gas boom isn't in the city. It's around the state, but mostly north and west.

I'm waiting for NYS to get off their asses and end the moratorium myself. I picked up a rather large amount of acres for less than $1k/acre. Offered leases for upfront of over $5k/acre within the year. Though a lot of those companies are just farking assholes. I know a lot of people who were signed up for $27/acre (yes that's $27 dollars, not the $27k that similar land in Texas was fetching)

(Dumb luck with the acres though. I just wanted enough land so that no one would build a development next to my house, and land was cheap in upstate NY. It took as much luck as buying a lottery ticket. I can pretend to be a savvy real estate mogul on the internet though. )

Ha, the problem is not enough taxing! So typical, no wonder this country is going to hell.

AbbeySomeone: PA is just a weird place.

You can say the same for almost any state along the coasts. Take any location with multiple large cities, close interaction with major metropolitan areas, and enough land to also have a significant rural area.

New York State: Upstate NY is so wildly different than the NYC area that they probably SHOULD be different states.
Virginia: NoVA, Norfolk, and the Shenandoah areas.
PA: Northeast PA, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Even the rural areas have very different qualities.

I'm sure there are more examples, but it's like hearing people refer to people in the US as if there was a chance that we would all have similar or unified viewpoints.

But yeah, PA is a strange place among strange places.

The ruled that the City Council ALONE could not declare bankruptcy. That all branches of the city government would need to agree. The Mayor, for example, was against the bankruptcy.

I dont get a town or state or country declaring bankruptcy. How does that work? I f I declare bankruptcy, pretty much everything I own gets taken by my creditors..

so if a town declares,..... then what? The creditors start taking the streets and sidewalks and setting up toll booths to collect whats owed to them?

As a left coaster my perspective may be askew but PA seems to be the most unnerving.
Rural people anywhere are frightening.

find a cheaper way than the incinerator, see about competitively bidding it to nearby municipalities that have either landfills or incinerators... there are many municipalities that deal with trash collection every day, but don't end up bankrupting themselves because of it.

2011-11-24 03:26:25 PM
wait a second... they have a population of about 50,000 people and they figured it was WISE to spend 300 million on an incinerator?

no cheaper alternatives like just buying a congressman or senator? Or.. say.. recycling more.. or paying someone else to take the garbage?

its not so bad if you stay out of the inner city.
although the police in lower paxton township are... problematic.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, we've managed to balance our budget every year since the recession began and we're still getting shiat from the state government, who apparently completely ignored the fact that the state capital (you know, the city they spend all their time in) was spiraling the drain.

It means all the labor contracts go out the window and they start selling off public buildings. Or in some cases, the ability to make money off those buildings. Parking fees, for example.

Frankly, this all could've been avoided if Harrisburg had simply filed for stupid protection years ago.

(Let's open a civil war museum! No Gettysburg totally isn't a hop skip and jump away. Let me distract you with this wild west museum.)

*waits for that eventual commuter tax.*

As a former resident and a former employee of an environmental action agency in Hbg, I can tell you that Pennsylvania imports garbage from 32 other states and Canada. The incinerator is how a lot of it is disposed of, which makes it one of the largest sources of air pollution in the country, if not the world. All of the additional landfills are poorly regulated and are poisoning waterways.

The incinerator is actually profitable, they fail to mention this, but the city has borrowed like 100million against the equity and then cry about how they can't afford to pay those bills. This is just stupid, PA needs to get out of the trash game and make other states responsible for their own disposal. Harrisburg needs to be held more accountable for their spending. That stupid town has had the state seize control of the school system already and now they can't manage anything else.

Harrisburg has potential, a surprisingly busy nightlife, a popular minor league baseball team- (but the stadium is on an island in the Susquehanna that floods like every year). Nice museums and shops, but it is also an absolute shiat hole full of crime and filth. I pulled up to a redlight on 13th street and someone tried to carjack me. Shootings were a regular occurrence on 6th st when I lived there but the police were out, in heavy force just watching the drunk people on 2nd. They have no real direction or leadership, the Mayor is an absolute joke.

This isn't just some podunk town, it is the Capitol. It should be our pride and joy but that just won't happen, anyone with an ounce of sense moves across the river to "the white shore" where they are taxed heavily and housing prices get pretty out of control- and it's worth it.

So, now I am done rambling on about harrisburg at 2am.

IamPatSajak: So, now I am done rambling on about harrisburg at 2am.

Most state capitols are poorly run hellholes, so don't feel too bad. All three of the west coast capitols are as close to hick towns as you can get and still have a functioning government, each doing its best to pretend the thriving metropolis an hour away doesn't exist and preventing any kind of local economic development. The corrupt idiots running the state tend to deeply influence (or also be) the idiots running the city.

Austin looks like a nice place to live, though.
