He may have actually made bombs or fireworks as a part of his highjacking plan but then decided against them. Titanium was used in many fireworks and flash powders in the 1970's up until today. Those additives would be chemically pure like the kind found on his tie. Flash powder is what is used in the making of firecrackers, M80's and pipe bombs.

There used to be a big bar in the Silicon Valley named D.B. Cooper's that had a big statue of him parachuting suspended from the ceiling. Ah, the eighties.

He learned an important lesson: never get parachutes from the people that you're robbing.

The story would have been more interesting if he stole the plane, throwing everyone out the back.

It's no mystery what happened to Cooper. He fell to his death out the back of the airliner.

/he didn't ask for "working" parachutes.

Except he asked for four parachutes. It was reasonable for authorities to think they were meant for the crew and therefore needed to be in working order.

He was a smart man this DB Cooper.

He was a smart man this DB Cooper.

Yeah: that's why he jumped from a plane in dress shoes. Which would have been torn off by the wind immediately.

And at night: always a good time for a jump over the forest.

I would say engineer because he knew how to over ride the safety system to open the door while the plane was in flight. Military training on the use of a parachute.

There's currently a bar here in Michigan named D.B. Cooper's that has no references to him whatsoever, and the people I've spoken to who were working or drinking there had no idea who he was. Why yes, it IS a dumpy little redneck bar, as a matter of fact.

Have you ever worn dress shoes before? If they fit, they don't fall off your feet. Well, loafers might. Good ones are quite comfortable and can put up with a fair amount of shiat. Leather, after all, is tough stuff. You can get decades out of a pair.

Also, if he died, they would have found the body. That was one of the most massive manhunts ever conducted- he lived, and blended back into society. With a nice wad of cash.

For three years, a team of private scientists has been studying evidence from the Cooper case at the invitation of the Seattle office of the FBI.

Huh... so in 3 years, private enterprise triumphs over a massively funded government agency w/ almost unlimited resources.

This crime happened so long ago for an amount of money now so paltry that one would hope it would be relegated to the area of "hobbies" rather than funded investigation.

I'd agree with you, but then they'd probably find lots of other trace materials consistent with fireworks as well. Only finding titanium probably rules out fireworks, unless they couldn't be bothered to mention or look for the other traces.

Not that I condone criminal acts, but if you're going to pull a hijacking/ransom, you should research D.B. Cooper as a case study in style.

In fact there was no safety system to prevent that door from opening. The safety system that they did install after that on all 727's that prevented the aft hatch from opening was dubbed "The Cooper vane".

Growing up in the northwest I was always intrigued by this story. I had a book that had the story of the hijacking and in the back was every serial number of every bill that DB took. I used to check my parents wallets and compare...unfortunately I never found a match.
I gave up after about 20 bills....
/I kinda hope he got away

Long since retired from service. Your average bill lasts a little over a year. And I'm sure he manged to get rid of the actual bills fairly quickly. Remember, this is before computers could track such things. If you dump 'em in bumfark iowa, nobody ever catches on.

The FBI really, really needs to give it up. He got away with it. He's dead or very elderly now, there's not much point in it.
