I figured this out a while ago. I have a lot of painful memories. When they got too bad, I would sleep for hours, and when I woke up, they wouldn't be so bad anymore. It's like your brain shuffles them all up while you sleep and delegates the bad ones to a lesser place.

I tell everybody who's stressing out big-time to sleep as much as they can. It's not like you can fix most things by sitting around sleepless and thinking about them anyway. It's either something you can fix, or just something you can fixate on.
