I like Elbow.

Was introduced to them years ago by a friend who had been living in London for a while; I've never heard them played on this side of the pond.

All those bands at England's disposal and they pick the one that nobody has ever heard of? All will be forgiven if they manage to convince what's left of all those bands they have to do the opening ceremonies.

to qualify for "absolutely best British band" wouldn't the band have to, you know, be known by people?

i know who they are, but mention the name to most people, and they ll look at you like a dog that's just been shown a card trick. I wouldnt blame them

But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles? Can we not vote on this?!

It's not any official Olympic theme, its the theme for the BBC's coverage of the Olympics. That's really, really not the same thing.

2006: saw Elbow at Avalon in LA, went down to the venue crazy early, saw their tour bus. waited a bit, they came out for soundcheck or whatever, got their autographs. Really cool personable guys. I told them I'd bought they LOtFW CD in Dublin a few months earlier, then when the stateside release came out, it had a bonus second disc, whcih I bought also. Guy turned his bandmates and cracked a joke, "we've stolen this poor man's money twice!"

2008: they played the same venue, touring SSK. Again went down there early, they again came out (took cabs to the venue, as true rock stars would). again, got their autographs, got to talk to them jointly and seperately for about 10-15 minutes. about 10 with guy, asking about B-sides of the album, some production questions, and so on. Well into this conversation, Guy goes, "wait a minute....'Aven't we met before? You were 'ere last time, weren't ya?"

ZOMG GUY GARVEY KNOWS ME.

they played a very hot show. I was DFC. talked to the gal that took these pictures for SPIN magazine

but yeah, we had a laugh.

Most people in the UK know who they are. That's why they won the Mercury Prize (new window) for The Seldom Seen Kid.

Since the Olympics are being held in London it makes sense... not sure what the U.S. equivalent would be but I'm thinking it'd be like New York hosting the 2012 Olympics with Mumford and Sons doing the music.

How dare they pick a popular band that simply hasn't made the cross-pond jump! And why do they keep talking about this stupid cricket bullshiat? Nobody knows what that is.

Mumford & sons are also British... But yes, a lot of UK bands make it huge home while remaining virtually unknown in US and Canada. Even when they are known, they are not. It's weird. Last year MUSE played a frikkin stadium in my city and most people I asked didnt even know who they were.

It didnt use to be like that

The Moody Blues?

I had hoped that they would use "Chariots of Fire". Isn't that an English Olympic thing and aren't the English huge on traditions?

Bah. I was trying to find an actual BAND that was popular in the US but not in the UK. Maybe Lady Antebellum? lol

On similar note, it's insane how few American-based bands there are anymore that make it to the big time. Muse, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Gorillaz... most popular artists in the US seem to be solo artists.
