It'll lead to that

Darn, just realised, that won't work if you are American.

'It'll leash to that'. Hmmm, now it doesn't make sense. Stupid language barrier.

Duct tape?

I used this technology for years, but then realized it would be cheaper just to buy a new goldfish if one ever wandered off.

My studded collar and chain leash are being used to restrain other things right now.

Ehh, just use a staple gun. That'll keep them from straying.

I know a guy whose pit bull was stolen and they used a GPS chip to find the dog, along with a bunch of other stolen ones that were going to be used for fighting/training.

Damn things get expensive. My local sporting goods store sells gps collars for somewhere in the neighborhood of $650. Must really love your hog dog to spend that kind of jack on them.

For people who use their dogs for hunting, the collar is cheaper than the replacement cost of the dog, not to mention time to raise/train the new dog.

Leashing a dog in a yard is cruel. If they get out of the yard then finding them will be a snap.

We still have leads in America, they are just different from leashes and many do not know about them. Leashes have a clip at the end that hook to a collar or harness while our lead typically wraps around the head and torso.

/just a general rule

It's not really that expensive given how much a person can invest in a dog. By the time you've paid for it's shots, training, spaying/neutering, flea treatment, grooming, toys, treats, food, miscellaneous vet visits, puppy damage, etc then it gets expensive fast.

A lot of people adopt from a rescue because it is inexpensive. Rescues are great, but there's still a huge cost involved so "cheaper" shouldn't be the reason to get your pet from a rescue.

Can you get a GPS collar that will report to your own GPS server instead of the vendor's?

I really don't want to buy equipment that sends my data to a 3rd party's database.

I'd like to GPS the cats in my neighbourhood, just to see where they go. Someone in the semi-rural US did that to their own cat and the roam area was huge. But I live in suburbia with at least a dozen cats in this block alone. I would like to see what kind of 'range' they have for the common vs MINE!!!*hiss* areas. Do they have a patrol route? Are they generally in the same place at the same time every day? Do any particular cats from different owners hang out together?

With regards to dogs, people steal them. Here in NZ, yes the gangs steal them to put them to fighting or if it's a little expensive yappy thing to sell on. If I had a dog I would have a GPS on it, no doubt.
