i remember reading (and it may have been on Fark, it was too long ago to remember) about some kid in PA who got to fire the ceremonial cannon at some high-school football games. Since nobody bothered to check for micro-fractures or anything, one day it finally exploded and seriously wounded the poor kid who lit it off. he got a lot of support from the local football fans. No.. wait... he got death threats because some people suggested canceling any further use of cannons at the games. The kid was in the hospital, getting death threats.

So, yeah. Smart move there NYTimes. You apparently don't know how sports fanaticism works in PA.

Stay classy, both of you (PA & NYT)

I saw this article earlier today. This is a sad case of the media thinking that it is more important to run a story than to protect the identity of the victim.

I think at this stage they just realize it doesn't matter, given how everyone and their brother has read the article in question by this point.

Ethics, what the fark are those.

Seriously, this should be taught in class as what not to do. I hope the victim and his parents sue the paper if he gets harassed over this, which I'm sure he will be because football fans are farking nuts, and would rather allow child rape continue unpunished than be stuck with a losing team.

If those boys were less sexy, these things wouldn't happen. The glimpse of a well-shaped calf, partially concealed by a flamboyant and flirty tie-dyed sock . . . if that doesn't get you randy, what does?

There is a conspiracy theory that certain parts of the media want to use what happened at Penn State as an excuse to "Normalize" the behaviour or perverts like Sandusky. While I don't put much stock in such theories you have to wonder why the Times would treat a crime victim like this. They are very protective of female rape victims for example. They treated the Central Park jogger with kid gloves while other newspapers were printing her name, workplace and everything else.

Really? Huh. I wonder why I associated that with PA... I know high school sports, especially football, is huge in rural PA. So is college for that matter. Point still stands, NYTimes should know better than to post that crap.

Of course, I DRTFA, so maybe I'm taking farkers word for the validity of the headline. Like those gore threads they are always starting up on the video tab.

Although the Times story has been all over the web, and of course the Times web site draws a huge amount of traffic on its own, we decline to link to it here.

So we'll just give you the name of the newspaper and the title of the article. For shame, New York Times, for publishing that article titled "For a Reported Penn State Victim, a Search for Trust," written by Nate Schweber and Jo Becker. For shame!

Oh, and don't forget "googling certain information in the profile results in the young man's name within seconds." You bastards!

It must be some sort of transferrence issue. Their lives are meaningless so they glom onto some kid that might have a future while they wasted theirs by knocking up a small town cheerleader.

If we compile enough victim identities, along with photos, we might at least figure out what Sandusky's "type" is. Effeminate brunettes? Muscular blonds? Saucy gingers? Because after he's in jail, those are the guys we can fill his cell block with, so that he can have access to that type all he wants.

And they can have access to him.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the socks comment in the headline, how it's seems oddly specific, then it's actually referenced in the article.
