Keith Richards 4?

I dunno...

2011-11-23 10:20:13 PM
This list is an absolute joke. Stevie Ray Vaughn should be #2, and David Gilmour and Frank Zappa should be in the top 10.

Oh, it's Rolling Stone. Of course it's a joke.

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship -- he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire -- has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter, singer, and master of a gamut of blues, R&B, and rock styles. Fair enough subby.

Born the day Jimi died. Same country too. I have negfinity times the amount of his talent. Even dead he's better at guitar (and the lady's) as me.

/Can only play Rock Band so so too.

wiseolddude: In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since.

And that is a fact. Rock guitar as we know it is indelibly stamped with his fingerprints, almost everywhere you look.

Is it blasphemy that I think the Derek and the Dominos cover of 'Little Wing' is a lot better than Jimi's original?

Link (new window)

I like Hendrix and all, but Clapton kills it on this.

2011-11-23 10:31:09 PM
Eric Clapton before Keith Richards? NOT EVEN IN YOUR DREAMS.

Sure, maybe, MAYBE, Eric is a better soloist, but so what. Keith had the tunes. And the tunes are EVERYTHING

/#1 is well deserved

2011-11-23 10:31:35 PM
I dont have to look at this to know that kurt cobain is in the top 20 and dave knudsen and j robbins are not mentioned

2011-11-23 10:32:19 PM
Angus Young isn't in the top five? LIST FAIL.

2011-11-23 10:32:33 PM
I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables.

Angus Young at #24? Suck my big balls, Rolling Stone.

bulldg4life: Keith Richards 4?

I dunno...

Clapton at 2? His 2 big hits are covers and the best bits of Layla aren't his.

2011-11-23 10:35:02 PM
top 10 needs more Zappa...

2011-11-23 10:36:08 PM
what a completely unsurprising list.

Though I am amazed at Kurt Cobain being listed, but no Kevin Shields or Bob Mould. Hell, Cobain even outranks Thurston Moore somehow...

2011-11-23 10:36:08 PM
24 for Angus Young, 25 for Tony Iommi, 32 Prince, 36 Randy Rhoads...
WHAT THE HELL?!!?
87 for James Hetfield 92 for Dimebag, Alex Lifeson 98...

No Yngwie F***ing Malmsteen , no George Lynch, no Joe Satriani, no Metal other than Hets and Dimebag...

Prince better than Alex? Better than Randy Rhoads... Have you listened to Crazy Train? (nevermind Dee)

List is dead to me.

2011-11-23 10:38:40 PM
Lists like these are very subjective and you could argue that any one of those guys belong at the top.
No one can be THE greatest. In what context? Raw talent? Songwriting? Speed? Phrasing? You could go on and on.
All that matters is if you dig the music and............Wait, WTF is Derek Trucks doing at #16???

And I'm sure your opinion is a scientific fact that isn't open to disagreement.

If it's a list posted to Fark, there's sure to be someone who disagrees with it, so don't think you're so special.

Hi. Your favorite guitarists suck.

Here's a list of my favorites:

2011-11-23 10:41:50 PM
You can't quantify something like this. No one plays the blues like BB King and no one can play arpeggios like Yngwie Malmsteen. So how do you put a number on it?

2011-11-23 10:43:08 PM
Duane Allman is at least 5 spots too low.

This. I never quite got the whole "Clapton is God" thing

As a serious guitarist, and a long time lover of all things rock and roll, the greatest rock guitarist is.....whoever the hell you feel it is.

Myself, I'm a huge Mark Knopfler and Duane Allman fan.

Mugato: You can't quantify something like this. No one plays the blues like BB King and no one can play arpeggios like Yngwie Malmsteen. So how do you put a number on it?

Well for starters, one of those guys plays with soul, the other masturbates his guitar furiously

HappyHarryHardOn: This. I never quite got the whole "Clapton is God" thing

The thing people forget about Clapton, due to his longevity as a performer and being alive, is that when he came around, not a lot of people were doing what he was doing. Sure, his technical skill may not have been the best, but the man could say a lot with the guitar by doing very little.

2011-11-23 10:48:38 PM
List fails without:

i22.photobucket.com

/Would have had a stroke if Billy Gibbons wasn't on the list.

2011-11-23 10:50:12 PM
And since this says greatest guitarists, this list fails if it doesn't have Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Eric Johnson, Lenny Breau, Steve Wariner, Tommy Emmanuel, etc

2011-11-23 10:50:31 PM
Alex Lifeson 98? LOL way to keep the Rush hate alive there RS

2011-11-23 10:53:01 PM
Django Reinholdt, Merle Travis, Jimmy Bryant, Stanley Jordan.......

2011-11-23 10:54:34 PM
whither_apophis: Alex Lifeson 98? LOL way to keep the Rush hate alive there RS

Yeah, it is a joke. Lifeson is underrated and such a great guy. Keith Richards in all honestly is NOT a good lead player. Great riff writer, yes. But watch them live, he is nothing special. Same goes for Pete Townshend.

2011-11-23 10:57:24 PM
Kurt Cobain better be in the top 10.

/I'm just saying

But where is your guitar solo going if your riff is boring? That is why Keith is 4, and should be 2. Same goes with Townshend

2011-11-23 11:00:19 PM
And in no world is Albert King that close to SRV. Watch the two play together, and you'll see the disparity. Plus Neil Young is not a top-20 player, in any universe.

2011-11-23 11:00:30 PM

Yeah, those five power chords are a biatch.

That doesn't make you a better player. I already conceded those two are great riff writers. But better players? No effing way. The fact that so many are above Chet Atkins show what a joke RS is.

I get what you're saying. Comparing Django to Keith, is like comparing apples and oranges. So, in essence, it's another masturbatory list we really should be ignoring right now...

plus, it's Rolling Stone, for christ sake...

Yeah. Id' want a list of BEST ROCK RIFF WRITERS. Now, that would be specific enough. Then another list of best, actual, best guitar players...

Yep. Like I said, the best rock guitarist is who you feel it is. There are countless metrics you could use to justify any number of players. These lists are generated for no other reason than to have people click and argue about it.

Strictly in terms of playing ability - I've always felt like rock guitar (and this list is pretty much rock only) wasn't anywhere near the top of the list in terms of difficulty. Popularity, sure, but difficulty? No way.

Classical guitar, for example, seems to demand a much higher standard of playing ability.

Pretty much. Anyone in the top 20 is about the same, depending on how you define "greatest guitarist"; and anyone in the top 40 is going to have changed rock for their era or genre in some way. How can you even put Link Wray and Angus Young in the same category? And none of the rockers would have existed without Les Paul, even if he was a terrible guitarist.

2011-11-23 11:21:00 PM
Fark_Guy_Rob: Classical guitar, for example, seems to demand a much higher standard of playing ability.

Definitely. Classical and jazz require so much more skill than rock/blues guitar. But, as the old saying goes, the rock guitarist plays ten chords to thousands of people, while the jazz guitarist plays thousands of chords to ten people

2011-11-23 11:22:27 PM
Gyrfalcon: Les Paul, even if he was a terrible guitarist.

Les Paul wasn't a terrible guitarist. He called himself that, but in reality, he was pretty damned good.

2011-11-23 11:23:33 PM
Is this another list made by people who think the only good guitarists are rock guitarists? Any list that doesn't have Django Reinhardt, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, and Wes Montgomery on it farking fails. Any one of those guys could SMOKE just about any rock guitar player you can name technically.

2011-11-23 11:23:49 PM
There is no universal measure for "best". babysealclubber nailed it; it's whoever you farking like.

/and I like EVH and RR and Dime and Yngwie and love me some Alex

Pretty much. Merle Travis has a whole method of playing named after him, FFS

John Petrucci.

the biggest redneck here: Duane Allman is at least 5 spots too low.

i love you.

Do you know who I always found extremely underrated in the rock genre? Andy Summers and John Frusciante.
