When I was in HS (way back in the day) the band geeks were the freakiest kids in school. They were having the most sex (based on the number of girls that got preggo) and had the most ridiculous hazing rituals. The jocks had nothing on them.

//Sorry the kid died.

Yeah. They do. It can be more pronounced in college.

Let me summarize for submitter: If it's a group in a school that involves competitiveness, chances are that it has hazing involved. And bands can and do get reaaaally competitive.

- More seats taken up by coolers (with "adult" beverages) than people on trips to away games.

- We almost got banned from using the customary tunnel to enter the field (for our habit of breaking all the lightbulbs inside).

- Lots of other nearly sleepless and dead tired shenanigans.

Rick Allen. (new window)

It's actually a pretty inspiring story. Their music was much better before he lost his arm, but that wasn't because of the drums.

And when they do, they will make the villains a cymbal of how not to act while in the band.

Band trips were always co-ed. A lot of shiat can go on during an overnight, 24 hour bus ride.

I'm against hazing laws in general. If a person really wants to drink 20 shots or swim across a frozen river, LET THEM! Society might be better if those people remove themselves as early as possible.

Even if your agree with hazing laws because of maturity or age issues with 18-20 year olds, take note that this guy was 26!

I'm always hearing about how 25 is when the brain is done developing (21 drinking age supporters used to say 21). At some point, the person who actually does the thing is the sole one who needs to be responsible for the outcome.

You usually have to put in two or three years before you can become the drum major. This guy should not have been the one being hazed. He should have been the hazer.

Has anyone heard just exactly what kind of hazing they were doing? I understand that afterward the drum major had trouble breathing, then after that, couldn't keep a beat.

Damn, I feel left out. I can't remember ever hearing about or knowing of any hazing at my school - and I was in the drumline. Yknow, I don't think there was a lot of sex going on either. Freaking WASP kids, you'd think they'd be all about the poonanny to deal with their repressed emotions.

I did, however, have a band teacher - mid 20s and married with kids - who had an affair with one of the students. He got fired a few years later, lost his marriage in the process. Last I checked, he knocked up the high school girl and they're living together now. Sandusky was doing it wrong, man.

First: A drum major is not a drummer, and it doesn't mean majoring in drums. It's the person in front of the band waving his arms at the football games.

Second: Yes, you can major in drums. Typically in drum set performance. And no, what's wrong with our education system is the idea that you can play in a garage band and you either have it, or you don't, and you don't need to work your ass off to be a successful musician. There's an obvious audible difference in a music scholar and someone who sat in their garage playing to Black Sabbath records all day. You know all those musicians you hear on the radio or see on television backing up singers, but have no clue who they are? Music majors.

Since I have multiple degrees in music performance, I know what I'm talking about. And I fully support myself with everything I learned in college.

I always felt sorry for the whoever had the bus the morning after a band event. I don't think there's enough clorox wipes to fix what some of us did in those seats.

Went to a house party that was thrown by someone in the marching band. (I was at UCLA.) Majority of the attendees were in the band. By the time I left, some girl had screwed two dudes in the closet when her boyfriend opened the door. Every bedroom was occupied and the bathroom had comings and goings throughout the night too. I left early.

I think it has to do with band geeks wanting to prove that they get laid and have wild parties as much as the "popular" people do. I think it's overcompensation. Most of the "popular" parties I went to were never wild.

I had one in my junior year of HS that about 15 years or so ago divorced his wife after 20+ years of marriage, (with kids whom I had classes with) and had a sex change.

Thanks. You learn something new every day. On another note, do you know why they call him a drum major if he doesn't play the drums? Why don't they call him the arm wavy major?
