This About That: Interesting, but can I trust it from Fox News?

Didn't say any more than we already knew, as the headline points out.

I was looking for that Teacher of Righteousness dude or something more specific.

If you want an interesting read sometime, Google Mandeanism, It's gnostic Mystery religion that seems to have a LOT in common with the Essenes. As a gnostic sect, they hadlevels of priesthood, each tuaght more and higher mysteries thant he one below. they called, the most enlightened and greatest of their teachers, the most enlightened were called "Nasoreans" (look like another word you've read in the bible to describe Jesus?) and in fact they believe that their two greatest Nasoreans were Jesus and John the Baptist. But here's the kicker, they revere John the Baptist, but despise Jesus because he basically broke his vow of secrecy and shared the sect's most sacred teachings with the unintiated.

The whole thing is generally regarded as a 2nd century creation but It makes you wonder what kernels of truth may be hiding in this legend

Cool! I'll have to look them up.

I haven't read much on the scrolls, and my knowledge of the Essenes comes mostly from Durant. But after reading this I was strongly persuaded that the texts were the foundation for the New Testament. Very Jungian.

"Scholars are divided about who authored the Dead Sea Scrolls and how the texts got to Qumran..."

Ummm, if by "divided" the FoxNews folks mean "five nut-jobs from unaccredited religious universities and that one guy with the University of Phoenix graduate degree in oldstuffology vs. every other historian and theological scholar on the planet", then sure, I suppose scholars are divided. Being FoxNews, I'm betting that is EXACTLY the case.

Eh, I'll give 'em a pass based on the news' reflexive "equal time for nutjobs" bent that Drew mentioned once. It's like they can't help saying "sun will come up tomorrow, some say."

Dr. Seuss? He has a great imagination.

Stephen King? He likes long, long books.

A million monkeys with a million typewriters? That would explain the many references to the Apostles throwing their feces.

"penned"

why the quotes? Is that word usage too "esoteric" for a Fox News audience?

2011-11-23 06:53:13 PM
Magorn: but It makes you wonder what kernels of truth may be hiding in this legend

Not much, probably. Remember, there are two(ish) sources for the Biblical Jesus. The gospels and one vague reference from a contemporary historian (who mentioned the Jesus cult, but not Jesus himself). Honestly, the gnostic Jesus theories are about as well supported as the no Jesus theories.
