It is a sad day when hungry and unemployed people have to resort to stealing gift baskets for food. If there were only a leader that could inspire the country to get back to work so that the malaise would end.

Unfortunately, Reagan is dead. So we are stuck with the current occupant that couldn't swing his way out of a wet paper bag, much less turn the economy around (or blame his failures on the opposition).

Well, it was nice that the hungry thief returned most of the gift bag. Here is hoping the kid in chemo gets better.

Someone stole a gift basket that was created to help with the medical costs for a 4-year-old boy who is fighting cancer-Michael John.

What a wonderful country you live in where a 4 year old boy's family has to beg and fund-raise just to treat his cancer.

C'mon America. When are you going to join the rest of the First World Nations and at least provide health care for children?

Ridiculous. Basket returned, everything's copacetic again. Turning himself in serves no purpose.

You do realize that that day is every day, right? Since the dawn of civilization.

This may actually be the best thing that could have happened. I'm sure the major press from the story will help donations.

Not news. This happened a few years ago, in an episode of Firefly ("The Train Job").

I guess stealing is easy when you dont have to look the person in the eye while you do it.

8/10. I don't believe you, otherwise it would have been a 10/10. But someone will, and bite on that line hard.

1) Poor starving people have been stealing since the days of cavemen.

2) It's a sad day when you read this story and you completely gloss over the fact that a family with a child that has cancer has to raffle off items to pay their bills so their child doesn't die. And then you shamelessly promote the political ideology that would see this happen MORE frequently.

Uh, no. Basket not returned. Not really. At least not in the condition it had been in when it was stolen. From TFA:

The Grille restaurant in Smithfield received a phone call from someone saying they were sorry for what they had done. They said the workers should check the back parking lot and that the gift basket was there.

The gift cards were there. The only thing missing was the food inside.

1/2 to 2/3 of the value of the basket was gone.

Ever receive a gift basket? This isn't a case of "I was hungry" or "I needed to feed my family." Gift baskets don't generally contain foods you steal because you're hungry and have nothing to eat, they contain novelty-type foods (in general). The restaurant in question is newly-opened, with a $10-30 per plate price range, so it's not catering to the wealthiest people in Virginia (though it is a little more than maybe some folks might want to spend every week, especially in this economy, it really is a bit of a mid point, price-wise).

Also, to the guy who asked when we're going to get healthcare for children, the answer is: 2014. But I will leave my opinion out of this to prevent this from turning into a political thread.

Seems like we need an "Asshole" tag more than an "Asinine" one.

Where do you come up with this shiat Why do you even mention it? Are you mentally incapacitated or otherwise lacking oxygen to the brain?

Last I checked, no, we don't know how much the gift basket is worth now vs what it was worth. Also last I checked we have no farking idea and it DOESNT farkING MATTER. What's there is there, what's lost is lost, and good on the thief for at least returning the rest.

If he continues to live and cannot pay the bills, who do you think is gonna foot the bill? You! God knows that this is what the government wants with the new world order. Don't you read the news? Why do you think we invaded Iraq? WMDs? Bullshiat! They found the gravesite of the ancient illumnati and wanted to harness their powers in order to power cheney's pacemaker and thus make him immortal.

Oh, we provide it. We don't withhold treatment from anyone really. You just get charged for it as long as you have the ability to pay. Charged a lot. It may require you to make lifestyle changes, and it may impose a financial burden that lasts the rest of your life.

That may indeed suck, but it's a wholly different thing from saying we don't provide health care for children, or indeed, anyone.

That is, unless you're the sort of person that puts money ahead of or equivalent to the life of a child. Then I suppose they're the same thing, and you're morally reprehensible.

Or he could have been a decent farking human being in the first place and, you know, NOT FARKING STOLEN IT TO BEGIN WITH.

Congratulating a thief for being a theif and saying, "oh, isn't that great that he at least returned half of what he stole" makes you look like an even bigger idiot than the thief.

If someone steals your mother's car, uses it to ram through her front door, steals everything she owns, but decides that, oh, she's probably poor and brings her checkbook and debit card back, does that somehow make him a good person because he decided not to steal her bank account?

You've got some seriously farked up logic you operate by.

Being an optimist is messed up logic?

The guy could have returned nothing. Still an ass, granted, but at least he returned something. That's messed up and/or a commendation? Are you going to tell me I'm defending the thief next?

Your analogy is not the same, because guess what? It's not the same situation, even remotely. Wait....I got one.

What if I made a bad analogy, which wasn't even related to the situation, and implied you supported it! DAMN!

How do you type when your head's so far up your ass, let alone read? Muscle memory?

Because if we had jobs that paid more than minimum wage, we could afford the insurance to pay for the treatments and wouldn't have to steal raffle baskets to eat.

If you lost your job after the democrats took control of the house and then the white house, you just might be upset.

Its ridiculous that people need to resort to gift baskets and raffles and money from the generosity of strangers (who can barely afford to pay anything, due to dropping wages and lack of jobs) to pay for cancer treatment.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUGH.

/But anyway, glad the thief had a change of heart.

Can't wait till we have a leader who can't talk his/her way out of a sentence.
We had one of those already, and it was HILARIOUS!
