Any holocaust movies this year? Twitching retarded gimps? If not, I'll put my money on Geroge Clooney's "Shameless Oscar Bait: The Motion Picture".

2011-11-23 09:44:17 AM
I'm surprised J. Edgar is that high. The reviews have been pretty lackluster.

I think the best movie I've seen so far this year is X Men: First Class.

In other words, this has not been a great year for movies.

I keep seeing rave reviews for this movie The Descendants. Who plays Milo?

Sybarite: I'm surprised J. Edgar is that high. The reviews have been pretty lackluster.

Not a big fan of bio-pics. It's usually shiat I already learned in high school with actors I know too well from other things doing bad impressions of historical figures. Like Hannibal Lecter doing his Nixon impression or the guy from Species doing Ghandi.

It doesn't help that Leo's old man make-up was terrible. But old people make-up usually sucks. Although I give Clint Eastwood props for still directing at 80-something. The guy's the farking Highlander.

/good bio-pics: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Gia for two entirely different reasons

I'd like to see Drive take home the Best Picture Oscar, but most likely,it'll be either The Descendants or *sigh* War Horse .

2011-11-23 10:32:34 AM
I haven't seen any of those movies.

2011-11-23 10:38:40 AM
I've heard fantastic things about Take Shelter and The Only Attractive Olsen Sister movie,so I'm going to check them out. Somewhere.

Best movies I've seen so far this year (note I haven't seen that much...):

Contagion

Captain America

Saw J Edgar over the weekend. It sucked. Plus the aging makup on Leonardo diCaprio was hilariously bad.

2011-11-23 10:50:08 AM
Looking forward to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

2011-11-23 10:54:54 AM
Midnight in Paris is hands-down the best movie I've seen all year; and I have trouble seeing a silent film as anything more than a post-modern gimmick

So Contagion was good? Because I saw Outbreak years ago and thought the subject was pretty well covered.

Tax Boy: Looking forward to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

I saw the original miniseries, and I wonder if they can really pack in all the detail into a two-hour movie.

2011-11-23 11:03:25 AM
this (next) years Oscars is going to be a pretty lackluster affair.
not much they can do about it... unless war horse is huge, there really doesnt look to be any good+crowd pleasers up for anything.

2011-11-23 11:05:28 AM
Looking at the list, had Pixar held back Toy Story 3 to this year, it could have had a genuine shot at the best film (it wouldn't have won, but there would have been some outrage when it lost)

2011-11-23 11:09:04 AM
Best movie I've seen this year: Rango.

/Quit screwing over the animated movies you Oscar dweebs. They're better than 99% of the drivel you shove out.

Unlike Outbreak, Contagion actually tried for realism (I went with some friends who have government jobs they can't tell me that much about, and my friend who does bioterrorism analysis said that other than some computer screen animation simplification with proteins it was spot on), the Contagion's SARSish/H1N1 mutation scenario was a lot more likely than the ebola-like disease in Outbreak, and the plot in Contagion made a lot more rational sense (I think Outbreak had some sort of silly military conspiracy bioweapon plot).

Contagion had the same structure as Traffic, in that it had many intersecting plots and characters. It was a much more complex movie than Outbreak.

Huh. That sounds a lot better than trailers and general conversation about it seemed to suggest. Thanks, I'll have to check it out.

War horse looks horrible!

Drive is the best movie I've seen this year.

2011-11-23 11:18:17 AM
My two favorite films of the year so far have been Drive and Hanna... and that's probably only because I haven't seen Attack the Block yet.

However I'm looking forward to The Artist and We Need to Talk about Kevin and Warhorse.

I'd like to see at least a nomination for 50/50. Saw it over the weekend. Joseph Gordon Levitt was unbelievably good.

Mr. Parker: War horse looks horrible!

From what I understand they simply took the avant garde play, which is beloved and acclaimed, and set it to film with real horses. And knowing Spielberg he'll get every theater in America damned dusty in the process.

Yeah, but the exciting thing about the play was that the horses were played by skeletal horse-sized puppets.

I can just imagine how furious Armond White is since RT stopped carrying his reviews.

I see him looking at that 100% rating, pounding his fists against the desk in impotent fury, tears streaming down his cheeks, and screaming to the Gods.

I don't even remember that one.

Okay, I know this is Fark and Spielberg can do no right, but "sold out"?

How is being faithful to the source material and getting strong emotional responses from the audience is "sold out"?

//if you really want to argue the point, Spielberg sold out when he made Jaws
///he thought the story was stupid, basically Duel in the Ocean, but knew it would be good for his career

Yes, I'm going to see Martha Marcy May Marlene over the holiday weekend. Really looking forward to it.

So far, I think the best film I've seen this year was Win Win with Paul Giamatti.

I liked X-Men, and I gotta agree with others, Drive is the best I've seen this year. At least the best directed movie I've seen this year.

But I also agree with your analysis of this year's movies, in general.

2nd best movie of the year.

I won't disagree with the latter half, but I can't say I loved drive. I admired it, I understood what it was doing - it just didn't hit me.

My five favorite films viewings dating from this year:

Paul
13 Assassins
Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Hesher (J. Gordon Levitt is the actor of the year IMO). "50/50" would be no.
The Tree of Life

Pandora's Litterbox: Hesher (J. Gordon Levitt is the actor of the year IMO). "50/50" would be no.

Can't believe I totally forgot about 50/50. That might be the best movie of the year. Here's my top 10 so far:

50/50
X Men First Class
Moneyball
Drive
Super 8
Rango
The Way Back
Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Midnight in Paris

Attack the Block is excellent. It's definitely better than Hanna (which I also enjoyed). Can't wait to see Drive, looks pretty phenomenal. Troll Hunter and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil were pretty entertaining as well.

I'd heard a bit about Win Win earlier in the year, but the chatter died down quickly, leading me to assume-incorrectly,it seems-that it was a rare Giamatti turkey. Good to know that isn't the case.

It's not a turkey, but its not amazing. It's a solid film, but nothing that really sticks with you. Not nearly as good as The Station Agent.

I saw MMMM a few weeks ago. It's good. And that Olsen sister is a really great actress.
But the ending is going to drive you nuts. It kind of ruined the film for me.

Where the hell is Andy Serkis in the best actor category? That farking ape made me cry dammit!

I WILL NOT see War Horse. I cried and cried like a little bitty baby when I saw Black Beauty. War Horse would destroy me. When I lost my last horse I was non-functional for months. There is something so tragic about such noble creatures fates being so completely out of the their control, and usually at the mercy of uncaring humans. It just tramatizes the living hell out of me.

As a child of divorce survivor, I can relate, I guess.

This is not a bookmark... ok, it is. I've been looking for some new movies to watch and nothing has caught my eye this year. Of course, getting married and adding 2 kids to my daily routine might have something to do with that but I'll give these movies a shot.

DamnYankees: Can't believe I totally forgot about 50/50. That might be the best movie of the year.

I wouldn't go that far. But there's no denying that JGL was dead-solid perfect in his acting. He's rapidly becoming my new insta-answer whenever I'm asked about who I think the best film actor of this new generation is (and I'm strangely asked that a lot). I don't think he's given a truly rotten performance (yeah, some are less than others but he's never less than "good" and often quite "excellent")

I never would have thought that I'd one day hold that opinion watching him on Third Rock From The Sun.

I hope he's at least nominated for either Hesher or 50/50. And I don't really give all that much of a sh(t about the whole Oscar thang.

/going to see "The Muppets" this weekend. Hope to add that to my top 10.
