I also read sometimes Penn State would let football players attend college for free

When you fund the entire athletic dept, and a decent portion of the academics, you get special treatment.

No one wants the press crawling around their football program looking for things to report. Which is just one of the reasons you should not cover up for a child rapist.

Exactly. Every football program has skeletons in the closet. The trick is to keep it to small and victimless skeletons (someone got let off the hook for underage drinking or a free meal off a booster). So you eject the rapist into low earth orbit and come clean on that, as opposed to say arranging it so the DoJ is going to spend the 9 months digging through every email you ever sent.

News flash: every Division I revenue-making athletic program is corrupt. Every single one.

That team you root for, with its reputation for class, high academic standards and a coach who's widely lauded for his integrity? Corrupt. That coach is paying at least some of his players and fighting hard to get them special treatment on campus.

That little underdog program that consistently punches above its weight and captures fans' hearts each year? Corrupt. It recruited its top players by providing illegal benefits and giving them special treatment on campus.

Penn State football likes to handle problems with kids internally. And by internally I mean balls deep internally.

Of course Oklahoma was one of the worst under Switzer. Nowadays, Oklahoma says that because Stoops is such a good, Christian man that they know there is nothing bad going on.

Of course that means it must be worse than ever.

This is probably the least shocking thing to come out of this investigation.

/Congress needs to pass a Sarbanes-Oxley act for universities that receive any federal aid including student loans

Paterno didn't hold up his players to the supposed code of conduct at psu. What makes the apologists think he took a hard line with his def coordinator?

Lost Thought 00: When you fund the entire athletic dept, and a decent portion of the academics, you get special treatment.
FTFY

Myth: Athletics funds Academics and Academics (Tuition) helps fund athletics...

From http://onwardstate.com/2011/04/12/cracking-the-budget-mystery/:

We'll start with the easiest unit, and the one that receives the most criticism for having the support of Old Main. I am, of course, talking about the Athletic Department. The Athletic Department is considered an auxiliary unit of the University and is entirely self-sufficient. For those of you who failed Econ 002, when a unit is considered self-sufficient, that means that the income generated by the unit is greater than its expenses. In the case of Penn State, the Athletic Department's self-sufficiency places it in elite company. According to a report released by the NCAA, only 14 Div. 1 FBS schools reported profits from their Athletic Department in 2009. Penn State Athletics made $18 million in profit in 2009-2010. No tuition money goes towards the Athletic Department, in fact the Athletic Department contributed $12 million to the University's general operating budget in the form of tuition for all of its scholarship athletes.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: that basement-dwelling team that you root for because it's your alma mater or in your hometown, that makes you think "if they're corrupt, they're doing it wrong, because they never win"? Corrupt and, yeah, they're doing it wrong.

This.

csb:
1. My high school's entire baseball team got caught drinking, no punishment
2. A (current) college football player who lived in my dorm had lots and lots of new shoes and an expensive car.
3. Girl team and boy team traveled together. A girl got caught jacking off two guys on the bus. SHE GOT PUNISHED, haha

Paterno and Penn State lied for 10+ years about sexual assault and child rape. You don't think they would have any problem sweeping minor issues like discipline and grades under the rug, do you?

My axe to grind is this statement, which we hear endlessly from one campus or another:

"Penn State football has long been regarded as an example of a well-run program that graduates an above-average percentage of its players..."

I'll bet they're comparing the football players to the campus population at large. If they would compare the athletes to the select subset of other students on campus receiving the same level of "scholarship" support (including at least some of those hardworking nerds over in Engineering), the athletes' graduation rate wouldn't look so good.

Apples/Apples, I think.
