Where would the Republican presidential contenders come down on this one? I'm trying to figure out the math taking into account the Personhood idea they all like so much ...

Baby = Person, and Dead Baby = Murder

Occupy Protesters = BAD; therefore Police Roughing Up Protesters = GOOD

BUT

Police = Public Employees and Public Employees = BAD

My guess is that the stigma of police being public employees is mitigated by the fact that they were roughing up an Occupy protester, and flowing from that, their preferred course of action would be to charge the (formerly) pregnant homeless 19-year-old girl with murder since she decided to exercise her First Amendment rights by attending a protest.

Stay classy, SPD.

I am on the fence on this. For one, any Occupy protester that sees the police should run away - because the police are going to beat the snot out of you.

On the other hand, having seen "passive resistance" by the occupiers, I can see why the police are escalating their force.

And finally, no matter how much I wanted to make an impact or make a statement by "being there", I would never endanger the life of a babby in the womb. Mother should have known better to stay away. Cops shouldn't have taken their anger out on her.

Pepper spray and pizza = two veggies.

/very sad day for US and the new police state. But hey, I have been barking about the police state for weeks and have been shouted down by the leftist because of it.

I just don't get how you see this and say to yourself 'the problem is that the woman went somewhere with a lot of police brutality'

I in general support the OWx movements, but this lady was just stupid. I'm sorry, but if you know you are pregnant you don't do anything that's going to endanger the kid, and that includes going to a protest where you know its likely the cops are going to get violent. Same reason you don't ride roller coasters when pregnant or participate in a marathon.

I'm not saying the cops are right, I'm not saying they should have done what they did. But if you give two shiats about your unborn kid, you don't go join a street protest.

What a fantastic country where someone shouldn't exercise a basic human right because there is a legitimate threat the police might beat her into miscarrying. What the fark is this, China?

Wasn't she at one of the earlier protests where the police decided brutality was the way to go? I really never thought I'd see a day where people in this country had to live in fear of being beaten and pepper sprayed for being a part of a protest.

I suppose it wasn't the smartest thing to do -- in retrospect -- but I don't think a pregnant woman (or anyone, for that matter) should have to live in fear of being viciously beaten by police for protesting peacefully. There is no justifying the police's action.

Wow, this is gonna be interesting. Republicans on the one hand loathe poor people but on the other hand they have an absolute fetish for fetuses. I guess they'll spin it as one cancelled out the other thus nothing really happened so it's a non-story.

I never thought I'd live in a country that would brutally beat to death a homeless, teenage, young mother. Oh, wake up. This happens all the time in dreadful neighborhoods. ALL THE TIME. If OWS would wake the fark up and realize that are effecting nothing, and start dealing with the goddamned realities of poverty they might effect some real change. Stomping your feet and beating your drums is nothing more than the tantrums of a spoiled tolder you most mirror. This angers me because that girl stated that she had no home other than this.

/She didnt have to get a paid abortion.

2 weeks? Maybe 1 month and they slap her with charges on Christmas?

Meh, I'd like to hear more of the story. Yes, cops can be assholes- happens every day. But on some occasions violence is warranted. Was she blocking a public or private way illegally, and refusing to move, even after the cops told her to move and that they'd spray her if she didn't (which they do most, but not all, of the time.)?

Or did they just start picking off damn dirty hippies because they wanted to relieve their need for aggression?

2011-11-22 07:03:08 PM
So, I'm guessing the argument here is dead supposed liberal, so the cop did a good thing, right?

Right, she probably figured she'd stay away from any crazy stuff, not expecting a cop to kick her in the stomach.

Sorry, but much as I support OWS, I am calling BS on her story. While stress has been (slightly) correlated to an increased risk of miscarriage, at 12 weeks, the baby is still snug in the pelvis, protected by bone and a sac filled with fluid that cushions it. It takes traumatic pelvic injury to force a miscarriage that early on. Abdominal blows alone won't do it, no matter how pervasive that "falcon punch" joke is.

Later on, when the baby is relatively exposed, yes, abdominal trauma in pregnancy can be deadly to both mom and baby (placental abruption, PPROM, internal bleeding, uterine rupture being some of the biggest risks of abdominal trauma later in pregnancy) but 12 weeks? Baby is two inches long, or less, and well protected in the pelvis.

2011-11-22 07:20:15 PM
I'm not sure what's worse. That someone would hit a pregnant woman in the face with pepper spray, and then kick her belly when she's down... or that anyone would actually blame her for it.

2011-11-22 07:20:23 PM
MidnightSkulker: Baby is two inches long, or less, and well protected in the pelvis.

Maybe they sprayed the pepper spray right up her vagina.

It is usually best to lay suspicion on the victim in such cases. She might have purposefully positioned her personage for proper pepper sprayification by the police, possibly.
