I love this thread SO MUCH.

I was kinda feeling like a man in the wilderness while reading that grand illusion of his in TFA, but he was a man of miracles once, and if he wants to take a midnight ride back to the grove of eglantine, then hey, everything is cool. Half-penny, two-penny and all that. But DDY, you're fooling yourself if you don't let it end. Haven't we been here before?

And now if you'll excuse me, Jennifer's gotta go put on her rock and roll shooz and look for some love in the midnight.

I saw an interview once with Dennis, and after watching it, I had zero pity for him. Dennis basically took the credit for everything, discovering Tommy Shaw in a bowling alley, bragging about how the band's label would give the DJ's tons of coke to play their music, about how he fought with the band to become more theatrical.

Then he just seemed mad and bitter about the band moving on and reuniting without him. Also the way he talked about drummer John Panozzo was disheartening as well, like "Oh, he ended up being a washed up hobo so we don't bother with him anymore".

I think I saw that interview too. "I was the soul of that band" or something. He's a tool, through and through - the only reason to pity him is really that he will never, ever understand that he's as reprehensible as he is.

But the Panozzo part ... I can't make that mesh with the rest of the timeline. They reunited without him in like 2000, and JP had been dead for like 4 years by then. Of course they weren't bothering with him at that point? I are confuse.

Sorry, I was trying to recall the interview. Dennis was talking about after they broke up, and Tommy went with Damn Yankees. John was washed up by that time. IRRC, they were talking about reuniting at that point and didn't even bother with John at that point because of his condition.

I think you've got your 80s music confused. "REO Speedwagon" was the big car-themed hit single off Prince's "1999" album. You're thinking of Air Supply, who did "Can't Fight This Feeling" on their "Breakfast In America" album.

I'm not going to lie, I have a soft spot for Dennis-era Styx, they played my high school once for like a five dollar ticket price. So did Cheap Trick, another time, before these bands became superstars, obviously.

I don't care if Dennis wants to claim he's prescient about the song "The Best Of Times" or anything in "Paradise Theatre". I've leaned on that song many a time when feeling like there was nowhere left to go and things were turning to shiat. It helped(s) me get thru the bad time and remember to appreciate the person that means something special to me, that we go thru these trials together, and we draw strength to continue, as partners, as man and wife. Ain't nothing wrong with a song that achieves all that. No sir.

I'm sure he's a supreme douche, but I tend to forgive him. Still, I wish I could play keyboards like him. And while I totally get that the rest of the band didn't like his theatrical direction, it's those unique creative choices, when well-executed, that distinguish one band among many and lead to pop/rock immortality. Look at Queen, for crying out loud; would they have been as big if they didn't push theatricality? I think with his rock-opera kick, Dennis was reaching for something intangible he couldn't quite realize in a practical way, but I admire his vision and creativity in the effort.
