According to NOAA, the fish will be sold on consignment overseas and proceeds will be held pending final resolution of the case.

so they take the man's catch, sell it for themselves and keep the profit?

f*ckers. this is what makes people not want to help the government.

Why would someone want such a large tuna? Are they edible? I'd assume at a certain size, they're not that appetizing.

If only we had a link to an article somewhere around here where a comparable tuna was sold for nearly $400K. Clearly inedible.

They are very edible. You can buy it fresh or in cans or pouches at the grocery store if you would like to try it sometime.

Let me guess what they'll be serving at the annual NOAA cookout.

Oh, I saw that. I was just posing a sincere question. I'm not a fisherman (fished once, caught nothing). I thought that fish at a certain size are not really tasty.

I didn't mean tuna in general, of course. I meant a 700 lb. tuna.

The canned tuna in the store is mostly albacore, not bluefin. I believe that taking of bluefin is restricted due to overfishing. The "no nets, only rod & reel" restriction mentioned in TFA is to reduce the number of bluefin that are caught.

That's true for some fish but not Tuna.

For future reference if you catch a half million dollar fish in in a net. 1. Hook it through the lips 2. Let it go. 3. Reel it in. 4. Take pics doing it.

Bureau-crazy at it's best.

Cool, thanks. I've heard it from my sous chef friends, but I didn't remember the specifics.

Last tuna my dad caught out of P-town weighed 750lbs. and netted $14k and that was 10 years ago. Those Japanese are rabid about bluefin.

Well the thing is dead. You don't want to encourage (as bill_01915 put it) others from "accidentally" netting them. So what... let it rot? Or make some money for the agency that polices this sort of stuff?

Let this be a lesson not to inform the government of anything. Especially if it's a windfall to you or those around you.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and the government will take what he catches and sell it to a foreign country.

Walken's Sock Puppet: Let this be a lesson not to inform the government of anything. Especially if it's a windfall to you or those around you.

and as a commercial fisher that's a good way to ruin your business.

There wouldn't be any way for you easily get rid of it. You would have to come up with an elaborate story that involved other people (who will very likely squeel, blab, and crack at the first opportunity). Which means the word would get out and you would be farked sideways.

Rong. Bluefin tuna is the ultimate delicacy regardless of size. Damn fish is probably worth $50,000

Yes. It's a shameful waste, but it's a HELL of a lot better than incentivizing overzealous and corrupt law-enforcement through asset forfeiture.

(Better yet, if logistically possible, donate it to an accountable charity that can make use of it to feed the needy.)

downstairs: "Or make some money for the agency that polices this sort of stuff?"

And who watches the watchmen? What's to stop agents of "the agency that polices this sort of stuff" from blackmailing (or otherwise strong-arming) fishermen into "accidentally" netting profitable fish and then confiscating them to sell at auction? Maybe kick a few bucks back to the fisherman to keep him quiet, maybe just threaten to pull his license on a technicality, maybe something nastier and more creative. Perverse incentive FTW?

WTF is your point? It's one fish, not a trawlerful. People aren't allowed to profit unless it's government? Fark you. I fish legally, with rod and poles, no net, in areas in open seasons, if and when I do. Buf if I land a 300# halibut, not a goddam one of you will know about it until it's smoked and half eaten. If you're nice, I'll even give you 30#.

2011-11-22 07:28:59 PM
*poles I mean downriggers. A 40# fish is a biatch enough to pull in on a regular old fishing rod.

But he did call National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Law Enforcement so he wasn't trying to scam anyone, he just didn't know, they could have just let it go.

I agree with this.

Also, you've got to educate yourself on the law so you know what the consequences are. Of course the bureau wasnt going to tip him off that they would confiscate the catch. Know the law and make an informed decision.

A decision to keep it quiet.
