FirstNationalBastard: Matthew 6:5-6:6

"When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Heh, I came in to post just this. Jesus doesn't love you back, Tebow. He thinks you're a hypocritical douche. But on the brighter side, Jesus and the magical sky wizard don't exist, so there's always that.

Thanks, this covers the subject quite adequately.

He is really setting himself up for a painful fall in the future. I do not envy the boy.

In what way is Tebow being hypocritical? To the verse, he's not praying or really even evangelizing constantly in public. Is it obnoxious? Absolutely. It was obnoxious when he was at Florida (even to me, as a Gator). But given the number of guys who constantly credit Jesus or God for their success, Tebow at least earnestly lives what he says. I'm not saying I don't find him obnoxious at times, a subpar quarterback at all times...but he's not a hypocrite, no matter what else he may be.

I'm not offended. Well, maybe my brain is offending by the idiocy, but I'm not personally offended or anything. I don't know why anyone cares.

Read the verse, then ask Jesus, not me. Jesus is the one who said it. Granted I don't even believe Jesus existed but Tebow does.

I'm trying to think up of a conversation between the "How do I respond to horrid accusations against me" Jerry Sandusky meme, and the "I need to thank Jesus every 7th word" Tebow meme. Someone go roll with that.

"I look at it as a relationship I have with him, I want to give him the honor and glory every time I get the opportunity," Tebow said. "And then after I give him the honor and glory I always try to give my teammates the honor and glory, and that's how it works."

I noticed how he didn't say that word with a capital letter.

Well, Jeebus ain't around to ask, but in today's world, I'd think that verse would be better interpreted ("that they may be seen by men") to televangelists, or even other athletes who do it. I honestly get the sense that Tebow is praying in those images for no other reason than to give thanks to a God he earnestly believes in - even if, yes, there are cameras around. He'd be doing it even if there weren't cameras or a crowd around him. My only real issue is him being called hypocritical. Completely agree his faith (and the coverage/punditry) around it can be obnoxious as all hell, but at least his is genuine.

I think 'ole Timmy is only giving a shout out to the good Lord in public, not really a prayer.

He does the serious stuff when cameras are not around.

Agreed. Atheists misinterpreting bible verses to suit their own worldviews are no better than Christians misinterpreting bible verses to suit their own worldviews.

Or should you tell her every single day when you wake up and have the opportunity? And that's how I feel about my relationship with Jesus Christ," Tebow said.

Ok then Tebow...praise Jesus every morning when you wake up, and keep it to yourself then. No one is saying you can't praise Jesus. They're saying it's farking annoying that you've made it the entirety of your public persona. It's farking annoying that 85% or more of your fan base only likes you because you're a bible freak that won't shut the fark up. It's farking annoying that you seem to be capitalizing on your faith at every turn, like you're running for the GOP nomination or something.

Mr. Tebow: If you're truly grateful to God for helping you make that touchdown, or just grateful for giving you a pretty good life in general - nothing wrong with that - AND you believe that God is all-powerful, why can you not accept that God already KNOWS you're grateful, because He knows the thoughts of your heart, and will give you an "atta boy, Tim," when He gets around to it?
Whom are you trying to impress with the public displays of piety? Despite what you might have learned around the SEC, football is not a religion.

Exactly.

Mister Rogers (Fred, not Aaron) was a Presbyterian minister. Unless you looked that fact up, you never would have known it by the way he acted in public.

Tebow's not exactly the most annoying thing in this deal, but the media hype which leads to him being Jesus's #1 fan every 7th word is completely overblown.

The reasoning I heard as to why they wouldn't, is that the offense under Martz is not what Orton would have been used to before. Caleb would be the better Q due to knowing the offense better than Orton.

It makes sense on paper to some degree anyway

I have no problem with his on-field rituals. Tebow can praise Jesus, hail Satan, or give glory to C'thulu, for all I care, if that's what he needs to do to win games.

Which he's DOING.

Besides, the haters can relax. In a few years, I'm pretty sure he'll quit football to open a mission in Africa or the Sudan, and you'll never see him again. Until then, I'm going to kick back and enjoy the show.

And the wins. Especially the wins. ^_^

I love this Tebow-mania.

You have the stupid "football experts" who claim winning is the be-all, end-all. They hate most statistics, and think QBs are the only reasons teams win. They HATED Tebow because he blows up their argument. He's a "just win" QB they can't get behind because he doesn't play as a traditional QB. Some of these guys (Cowherd) have come around and now claim they love Tebow.

Then you have the "smart" experts who rely too much on stats, and think Tebow is the worst QB they have ever seen. Anyone who DARES to think he's good is an idiot, or a non-football fan.

fark man, it's somewhere in the middle. Tebow is a GREAT runner. Not a good runner, a GREAT runner. But he's also not a RB. He's a great running QB. He looks like Gronkowski in the open field. So far, he has been a terrible passer. He has been lucky to avoid interceptions, but also thanks to a scaled back game plan, is not put in many situations where it would be easy to throw one.

If Tebow improved his passing, he could be a great QB. Really special, and fun to watch. If he doesn't improve at all, he's not long for the NFL.

As an Athiest, and a huge NFL fan, I really enjoy Tebow. I love that Fox didn't try and have this kid run a traditional offense. I love that they run twice for every pass. I love that he's winning, and driving a bunch of people crazy. The dude is a sick athlete, and as he is now, really dangerous with the football in his hands.

He seems overcovered due to being very Christian, and a White running QB. But I don't hold it against him. It is what it is.

Ali was also great at what he did.

All Tebow's good at (from what I've seen of him play) is trying to get his receiver's killed by throwing a foot behind them.

It does make sense. Even Bulger makes sense by that reasoning. Then again, Bulger would probably get killed in a few weeks.

The Redskins probably won't pay the $2.5M over six games on Tebow's contract just to get back into a QB controversy with Grossman with a best case scenario of 8-8.

So Texans or KC.
