I think they picked the wrong dog to make their case.

Chaining a dog is lazy and stupid. If you can't be troubled to train your dog, don't get one.

Please don't forget to spay or neuter your Floridians.

Definitely a HOTW candidate, just for the WTF factor.

I can see it if you don't have a fence and you do it when your dogs have diarrhea. You're not going to let them in the house with it, that's for sure.

Your dog wants steak 4G.

Naturally when something is sick and dehydrating, the thing to do is to tie it to a tree like it's Christina Ricci.

Not that their case is worth a damn. Orlando has pretty strict chaining laws already - you have to have at least a 10 foot chain and there must be food and water within that 10 feet. What more do they want?

I have two pugs which really don't require chains, i just stick them on the couch and they will stay there until dinner time. I am wondering if there is a product which does the same thing as a chain but doesn't stop the dog so violently. Maybe a bungee cord?

Thats not strict, it's pretty common and I know we have the same laws in Charlotte.

Banning chains is farking stupid. My pit has a backyard he doesn't need to be chained. But he has a 12 foot tether in the front yard because he gets more sun there and he can watch everything going on down the street.

Shade when they have that summer orlando weather?

my neighbors had an invisible fence. it worked amazingly well.

I don't understand why you would get a dog if it is just going to spend most of its life tied to a tree or fence post.

And you can tell the ones who are there almost all the time because you see that big ring of dead grass around their post.

I note that the article states that Floridians are becoming more aware of threats to their animals like poisonous insects, daytime heat, and birds of prey.

If birds of prey are a threat to your dog, it is not a dog. It is a large rodent.

Apparently I miss the point of this sort of ordinance. My neighborhood is awash in "untethered" dogs that wander through and do whatever the hell they want to, and it's damned annoying when you have a family member who is dog-phobic.

In fact, I remember big pushes in several communities to require cats be kept on a leash in your yard

WTH are people supposed to do with outdoor pets, or simply those that need to be outside of the house for a bit? I know my sister has a mastiff mix that is capable of climbing/jumping the highest fence local ordinances permit. When their house is being worked on or her husband is giving music lessons, they put him in the back yard on a tether. A nice strong tether.

There is no dog that is so well trained, that you can let it out into an unfenced yard to do its business, and expect it to remain in the yard for the entirety of the time it is outside. None. I don't care how well trained you think your dog is, or claim your dog is, it will leave the yard. Except maybe in the dead of winter.

2011-11-22 04:56:58 PM
it is not the responsible dog owner they are targeting. It is the owner that puts the dog out when they leave for work, tied to a 5 foot rope that they are targeting with this ordinance.
Think of it as being similar to the cell phone use while driving ban. Many people can make and receive a phone call while they drive. But, a very few are too dumb/slow to do so. So, they outlaw it for everyone.

/liked the headline when I rtfa

How is that not already illegal? I understand it's not enforced, but what kind of area doesn't have dog laws?

And who has never had their dog stolen???

FTFA: But a tethering ban, enforceable by a code violation and fine, would be "extreme," said Lake County Animal Services Director Marjorie Boyd, who recommended Lake's measure. "Not every dog is an inside dog," she said.

This bi!ch should be fired. Tethering makes dogs more aggressive; a dog that has been tethered is 3x more likely to bite. Also, dogs need to be socialized and that means being inside with the family at least part of the time. There should be no usch thing as an "outside" dog.

I've been using 30' of 3/8" shock cord for years. It's basically bungee cord for sailors that doesn't loose its elasticity and handles chaffing well. 30' of the stuff stretches to 40~45' or so.

If there's no shade in the yard, an invisible fence won't help either. Nevermind that such costs $300 vs $10 for a chain.
