Huge tracts of land thread

I broke in to Six Flags New Orleans several times over the last year to explore and take pictures. It's.... pretty creepy. Despite the fact that it is long abandoned, it somehow changes every time I go there.

Here's a link:

Everyone told me I was DAFT to build a castle in the swamp. But I built it anyway...it sank into the swamp. I built a second one...it sank into the swamp, so I built a third one. It burned down, fell over then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one, boy...

Stop that, stop that! You're not going to do a song while I'm here. Now listen lad, in twenty minutes you're getting married to a girl whose father owns the biggest tracts of open land in Britain.

Good pics! There is that castle-like structure on Irish Bayou that I have often meant to stop and take a pic of as well, though that has nothing to do with TFA.

They could just open it as is and call it the "Old and Abandoned Amusement Park", it'll be a great place for meddling kids to hang out. Of course after it shuts down after the next hurricane it would be the old and abandoned Old and Abandoned Amusement Park.

It's like staring at something out of Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm actually shocked that those hotels and buildings aren't populated by groups of homeless people. Chase out the rats and bugs, and they'd make decent shelters.

Why can't a company needing to build a manufacturing site buy this land and develope it. NOLA has a large group of residents that could become the workers once the facility is complete.

/Hyndai, Goodyear, somebody for farks sake realize the possibilities of that much land next to a top 25 city with a built in labor force.
//NOLA local, although I confess that I don't know if there are any constraints as to what can be developed on the land, ie zoning laws.

Yeah this is from back in the days when Danny Snyder was chairman of Six Flags. He wasent even tall enough to ride most of the rides. The funny part was they brought up Six Flags a bunch of times in that story he sued the City Paper over.

Because, unlike say abandoned factories, they've desinigrated to the polar opposite of what they used to be. So the over-the-top happy clown faces, cartoon characters... the once bright pastel colors... now rotting.

By the way, love the pics gilgigamesh!

Well the article says one of the proposals is:

•Packaert LLC: electric power generation plant

However from everything I've heard they really want an amusement park, because Six Flags did pretty well (other than it was poorly run by a bankrupt company).

Also, do note that the "New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner, LA MSA" area is #46 in the country, not in the top 25. But, still, its a valid point you're making.

So, why is this asinine? Should a huge amount of land sit empty because in a hundred years, it might get flooded again? The insurance company will charge them more. If they can afford it, oh well.

Is this just the vividness bias, or am I missing something?

I could come up with one intermediate use for the park...

Paintball field.

There are relatively few paintball fields that do a good urban theme. Minimum inputs, mostly a matter of making sure there aren't any serious hazards.

I confess that I did not look up the population numbers before making that statement, but the sentiment stands. NOLA is a fairly large city with a huge chunk of land right next to the city and that much land in other major cities would be a gold mine.

I don't know what vividness bias is but, redeveloping on this site is asinine because:

It's a swamp.
It's too hot during the summer to be an amusement park.
It's not accessible by rail or water limiting it's manufacturing potential.
Nobody's willing to invest there unless the city backs them financially.

I will acknowledge that it's a handy landmark when you're flying into Lakefront Airport, but all you need for that is those two white columns.
