Antedeus: My interest in this is purely from a sociological standpoint. So, you have "fundies" pushing their religion in your face? Really? How? When does this happen? How often? Do you live in a religious community or region?

Is it something like this perhaps?

Anti-christian Atheist Billboards go up just in time for the Christmas season (new window)

Right. Telling people to think for themselves is exactly the same as inciting fear and hate against atheists / muslims / homos. It's the same as pushing laws agains said groups. It's the same as killing members of said groups.

Please.

Antedeus: CheekyMonkey: If religious folk kept "how they worship" as a personal matter, no issue would exist.

So, it's the other guy's fault then? You guys make it seem like religious people are all around you forcing their views upon you. That is bullshiat. You live in a society where religion is a huge part of the culture and you take any exposure to the larger culture as insult. Really, aside from the an occasional bell ringer at Christmas, Mormon missionary or Jehovah's Witness ringing the bell who is persecuting you? No one.

Hmm. I noticed that you snipped the (more important) portion of my post regarding the attempts of religious folk to have portions of their particular beliefs codified in law. That is certainly an attempt to force their views upon the rest of us. It isn't bullshiat, and I think you agree, since you refuse to address it.

No one is persecuting ME particularly. However, if you think that the Religious Right's attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade, prevent homosexuals from attaining the same rights as heterosexuals, and protest Muslims for merely existing in the country do not count as persecution and attempts to force their religious beliefs on others, then you are delusional.

Antedeus: Except ... you know ... they didn't. I, unlike you apparently, read that Slate blog. The headline was a lie which would have gotten a legitimate journalist fired. Life is simple for you isn't it? A bumper sticker world, full of comic book style villains where everything is black and white. I assume your atheism is much the same.

Wow, it took you awhile to come back this time.

i.r.id10t: .. anyone have a suggestion for how us Jews celebrate Christmas?

Not sure if it's been said but you can gather round the cash register and sing 'Oh what a friend we have in Jesus.'

Oh, I should ask a question.

What are you this time? I imagine the associate professor gig dried up.

I'm an Asian Buddhist. This season, I'm going to wish everyone a happy holiday, and make sure it's not the holiday they celebrate. I'll wish my Christian friends a happy Hanukkah, wish my Jewish friends a merry Christmas, and wish any other non-black friends a happy Kwanzaa. Equal opportunity, equally mildly inappropriate, much like any time anyone wishes me a happy holiday. I don't have any holidays this time of year, dammit!

Well, except maybe New Years. But who doesn't recognize the beginning of January these days? Even people on alternate calendar cycles have to abide by the Western calendar.

I did not know that many Buddhists were in Russia.
