I knew I enjoyed working at B&N for a reason.

2011-11-22 11:00:20 AM
I worked for a company that sent out a catalog, and we always used "holiday" though everything in our catalog was Christmas themed.

However one year we decided to put the word holiday in big letters on the cover.

Our customer base had a large contingent of christian republicans.

The number of angry letters and calls we got was staggering. The use of holiday is apparently the biggest thing wrong with America and we were playing into Obamas hands.

The war on Christmas is a serious threat. The secular threat is an existential one. We have intelligence on what the enemy is up to. We had to water-board a few elves, but we got the proof we needed.

The comments are fantastic. "I can't celebrate my Saviour's birth without a shopping spree! Why must you ruin the meaning of Christmas?"

2011-11-22 11:36:19 AM
The comments on that page are terrifying. The few voices of reason, rightly explaining that it's purely to be more inclusive of all religions and beliefs, are called "naïve," told to "wake up," and lectured about how it's clearly an attempt to eradicate Christ and Christmas from the national discourse.

I don't know what the solution to this is. I'm imagining a large hammer would be part of it...

Apparently I can get my special edition, Satan worshipping Air Jordans at Foot Locker. Good to know.

I'm all for eradicating Christ from the national discourse. This country would be better off if fewer people thought they were ordained by the man in the sky to tell the rest of use how to live.

I'd love to see a purely Christian holiday called "Christmas" which has baby Jesus and Nativity scenes and religious carols and candlelight services. Christmas with all the pagan/commercial aspects removed.

At the same time you'd have a purely secular, all inclusive winter holiday called "Yule," which would be all decorated trees and Santa gift giving and all that junk. Christmas with all the Christian religious aspects removed.

It would be the best of both worlds, but the fundies want to own all of it.

Anti-Christmas stores. THESE STORES DO NOT CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS:

Katz's deli

Lucky fortune Chinese carry out

House of Kabob

Taste of India

DO NOT EAT AT THESE ESTABLISHMENTS!

2011-11-22 12:14:37 PM
I posted in the comments section about how the origins of Christmas are Pagan. I expect to be cast into the pits of Hell within about 10 minutes.

Why did I subject myself to that?

Christ was risen on Black Friday or something. Right? Isn't that why there are ashes on your forehead that day?

I'm an atheist so you know what you get from me on Christmas?

Sympathy.

Laugh if you must, heretics, but if Jesus returns this winter, he'll be glad that my mindless overconsumption and wasteful spending are being done in His name.

i've got a feeling that Victoria's Secret probably won't lose much business being on this list.

2011-11-22 02:37:25 PM
The comments in that article are terrifying. I weep for the future of humanity if we can't give up such stupid superstitions and fables.

Thank you for keeping us updated.......we need to do all we can to stand up for Christ!

Because the God that created the universe needs defending against people using the word holiday?

2011-11-22 02:37:47 PM
When I worked at a chain bookstore, I'd get people yelling at me all the time when I answered the phone "Happy Holidays" (as instructed by management). I have a special little burning lump of coal-powered hatred in my heart for people who go out of their way to give employees grief over policies they have nothing to do with creating.

2011-11-22 02:37:48 PM
Victoria's Secrets is anti-Christmas?? Nonsense: where do you think my wife got her Jingle Bell panties?

The only thing more obnoxious than that article are the Facebook posts by my FINE relatives with the "if you agree with this post that it is CHRISTMAS and not holiday greetings, copy this ASCII text" to your profile.

What the heck does any of that have to do with the integrity of American families?

About page: American Family Association (AFA) a non-profit 501(c3) organization was founded in 1977 by Donald E. Wildmon, who was pastoring First United Methodist Church in Southaven, Mississippi, at the time. Since 1977, AFA has been on the frontlines of America's culture war. The original name of the ministry was National Federation for Decency but was changed to American Family Association (AFA) in 1988.

Oh... so it's a moniker used by a church which wants to impress its ideological values on others, adopted only after it found that the original name spoke too truthfully to its motives.

Just a bunch of fundies getting their panties in a twist over the idea that Xtianity isn't the center of the universe. Nothing to see here.

2011-11-22 02:42:37 PM
Those kiddie-diddlers at AFA need a real hobby.

2011-11-22 02:43:01 PM
Ya know...I'm a anti-AFA mood. Happens every year. Why? Two things: Ace Hardware and their stance adoption. 1) I have family that currently do or have owned ACE Hardware stores, or managed chains of others over the years and 2) Their official stance that people that adopt/put up for adoption children (which numerous people in my family, real or figuratively have done) don't constitute a "real" family according to them

I'm going to farking bury you with your mindnumbingly stupid lists AFA. Like I do every year.

kinda farked up your shopping list eh, AFA?

/anger mode off
//love all my adopted friends and family, or those that are or may be considering it, and there are a lot of them.

I usually do all my Christmas shopping at Dollar Tree but now that I know they only rate "Marginal" I might have to switch to Family Dollar...

"A hate group's guide to holiday shopping".

I suppose being in the AFA's good books is better than being supported by the KKK. I wonder if any of these companies in green are bothered by having the AFA's praise?

You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company if you ruin the image of Christmas they spent years building.

/God help me, that was fun, but terrifying

2011-11-22 02:45:19 PM
Ever since I was a little kid, I always thought "Happy Holidays" sprung from the fact that there are 3-4 secular and religious holidays crammed into a six-week period, and you can just cover the general spirit of the season by saying "Happy Holidays."

Manufactured outrage is manufactured.

I thought about posting in her defense, but sadly it looks like you can only comment from Facebook. With prospective employers doing Facebook searches (I'm not currently looking for a job, but the internet never forgets) I don't want my name showing up anywhere near that fustercluck of a site.

One day of gift giving vs 8 days? Yeah, I can see what is driving it ....

When asked by a young coworker from NY what Jews do during Easter I took great pride in telling him "oh, we round up a tall skinny hippy looking dude and nail him to a cross" ... anyone have a suggestion for how us Jews celebrate Christmas? I'm leaning towards "we take over all toy store and battery manufacturers for the profits" but I really want to take a dig at the religion side...

2011-11-22 02:51:00 PM
Wow!!! Look at all the butthurt from the comments section. What these christian fools do not understand that the winter celebration holiday has been celebrated at least 10,000 years before christianity was made up.

So you sit around wearing women's underwear, listening to your new boom box, and unfolding paperclips while you read, too?

2011-11-22 02:54:21 PM
Christmas is waaaaay older than Jesus. But these folks don't care, they're intentionally ignorant and just want something to pretend to protest with their self-righteous bullshiat.

2011-11-22 02:54:34 PM
Man, BR is really going to miss all of those potential sales from fifty-something, rural Southern women with a high school education. That's their target demographic.

2011-11-22 02:55:34 PM
So basically all the poor persecuted Christians are pissed that stores aren't acknowledging their winter solstice celebration they stole from the pagans? They do realize there are other holidays at that time of year, like Hannukah, and perhaps "Holiday Sale" reads better than "Christmas/Hanukkah/etc. Sale"?

Cue whaaaambulance.

The origins of a festival on the winter solstice are pagan. The origins of Christ mass are Christian.

All other factors being equal, I'd shop at a KKK endorsed store before an AFA one.
