Yeah, this lady is getting what she deserves, but the US meat industry regularly treats livestock with a similar lack of humanity, and yet people don't think anything of it. If you take issue with some tw*t decapitating a pig, you may want to rethink eating meat in the US unless it's grass finished/free range meat. Even then, they're still killing the animal so you can enjoy your lunch. I don't know why people are getting upset over one pig when we as a country kill more than a half billion animals a year, most of which live really shiatty lives before they get processed.

Wild
Endangered or protected.

Killing and/or abusing each without the proper permissions gives some sort of criminal penalty.

The issue is she killed an animal she did not own for sadistic purposes rather than delicious purposes. Nobody gets 50 years for abusing an animal. They do get 50 years for intentionally inflicting psychological trauma, otherwise known as being a goddamn terrorist.

Did some digging into the crimes she's pleading guilty to, and most of the possible sentence would appear to be from the B&E charge.

Here's what she plead guilty to:
2 counts of killing or maiming livestock - each is a class 5 felony, although apparently if the pigs had been service animals, it would have only been a class 1 misdemeanor for the first pig and class 6 felony for the second.
1 count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance; Adderall is Schedule II, so that's also a class 5 felony
One count of Breaking and Entering - there are two statutes depending on intent (1 - intent to murder, rape or rob, or 2 - intent to commit another misdemeanor (new window) but both become a class 2 felony if you bring a deadly weapon with you.

Here's the Virginia sentencing guidelines

Assuming the B&E charge includes the upgrade for possessing a deadly weapon, it's a minimum 20 year sentence (could be up to life, which I'm guessing is out as part of the guilty plea), plus a possible fine up to $100,000
The class 5 felonies could each get anywhere form 1 to 10 years plus a fine:
e) For Class 5 felonies, a term of imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than 10 years, or in the discretion of the jury or the court trying the case without a jury, confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.

so the 50 years would be for 4 charges together, with anywhere from 2-20 of that for killing the pigs.

According to this article, she also plead guilty to B&E of a church where some property was found missing. It's not clear to me if that's the B&E charge related to the pigs or a different addtional B&E charge, especially as the articles also state prosecutors dropped a charge of B&E and Destruction of property.

/I'm ok with her being locked up for 20+ years. She doesn't seem like the kind of person that should be walking around free. She could eventually escalate from pigs to kids or worse.

Setting aside for a moment that it was a pig, and remembering it was a living thing, people who harm animals to get back at their owners are usually sociopaths. They often progress from harming animals to harming people. And their first targets are generally children.

We need to consider the motivation for her crime, not just the species of the victim. Yeah, it wasn't a child. This time.

You can't prosecute or punish a crime that hasn't occurred. If she's a sociopath (and she very well may be) then she needs treatment.

No one said we should. the five felonies she's been charged with, however are a different matter.

She is not going to get 50 years, why are people talking about that. The article just mentions that it is technically a possibility.

Just like Lindsay Lohan could have gotten a few years in prison, and murderers can face life time in prison or even execution.
