If Coté has HIV, she can give it to me.

Well, of course it's stabilizing... because everyone has aids

From the article: "last year, there were about 34 million people with HIV. While that is a slight rise from previous years, experts say that's due to people surviving longer"

So, it isn't stabilizing, it's getting worse.

By that standard, if a new disease came along that was particularly devastating to people with HIV and killed half of them off in six months, it would be "getting better" since it reduced the number of people living with HIV.

The usual method for monitoring an epidemic is new cases, not total number of cases (at least for chronic conditions). The 2.7 million number is the important one. Since it hasn't gone up in three years the epidemic has stabilized. Or, rather, has dropped off a bit, since each year the world's total population goes up some.

I mean, you can go by death toll, but that's a hard number to really nail down for AIDS, since it's always something else that actually kills you.

Ah, so the Catholics have stopped telling Subsaharan Africans that condoms will condemn them to an eternity in a lake of fire, then?

2011-11-22 05:38:13 AM
Awesome, now instead of slowing dying from AIDS, they will slowly die from malnutrition and an increasingly short water supply that is becoming more and more contaminated. Whatever floats your boat i guess

And of the godzillion people infected, somehow I don't know a single, FARKing person who has it (personally, I do know OF Magic Johnson). Oh well, I also don't hang around the monkey-FARKing crowd, so there's that.

The total is cumulative so the number could increase by more people getting the disease or by people surviving longer or a combination.

Okay so HIV isn't going to be the pandemic killer bug that knocks down 50-75% of the human population. Bummer! Now we're gonna have to do it ourselves, but the Cold War didn't work either!

Suggestions?

Much as I hate to lend any credence at all to the fairy tales at the center of the Conservatives' beliefs, they do contain a grain of truth, albeit couched in their typical, "all things come from our magic sky-ghost"- mythology.

Armageddon is coming. Slowly, inexorably, unavoidably, due to the arrogance inherent in sentience. Because we have a written language, and the ability to think abstractly, we believe we know what's best. Best for ourselves, best for others, best for the planet. While the Conservatives pretend to be more concerned with nature, to placate their hunter constituency, they allow their more affluent members to pillage, plunder and exploit the natural resources with little concern for replenishing what they take. The world is their oyster, given to them by their "God", and damn if they're not going to consume all of it they can get their greedy, fat little fingers on.

The Liberals are no better. While they pretend to be in opposition to the Conservatives, they ignorantly wreak destruction by actively seeking to expand their own constituency of little "carbon-footprints" (who do little but add to mankind's resource requirements, thereby subtracting from the ability to return anything at all towards replenishing the environment,) by effectively negating the balancing effect that poverty and disease have towards controlling the Earth's "human infestation". Hatred and envy are the tools of their trade, so they're going to stoke the little fires all they can, and make sure there are plenty to stoke.

The result: a "perfect storm" of cataclysmic proportions. While one side perfects methods of resource exploitation, the other side sees to it that the resources exploited are never enough. Like hungry termites, the human beings consume and consume, and devote more attention to "enlightened" issues, ignoring the fact that mankind is pushing the whole planet to extinction.

Despite all our intelligence, insight and technology, we've not learned a single thing from Easter Island. There, huge stone statues speak of an ancient society with enough resources to afford monumental endeavors of art. Yet, the statues stand silent watch over an island completely devoid of trees, testifying to herculean mismanagement of resources.

29 years here in March. Perinatal infection. Sucks balls, but you just have to suck it up.

Now you can say that one guy on the internet who quoted me on FARK and Magic.

... So, I actually like AIDS. Firstly, it took the biggest cork-soaker I ever had the displeasure of having to deal with off the planet altogether. Secondly, it's all-natural, being yet another antibody the Earth has come up with to combat it's human problem. We come up with new ways of combating a virus, the virus comes up with new ways of circumventing our efforts.

This is akin to saying the US budget crisis has stabilized because (purely hypothetically) the deficit remains the same for multiple years in a row. Call me when the HIV infection rate equals the mortality rate plus recovery rate, then I'll consider the epidemic stabilized.

But I applaud your and subby's efforts to undermine public confidence in the UN's demonstrable ability to deal with this massive problem. Fark those people with HIV. They're not me. Let them die.

Right?

Yes well the church should know better.

If it were actually stabilizing then the number of new infections would equal the number of deaths giving a stable number of infected. Their numbers show 2.7 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths meaning that there are almost 1 million new cases per year. That means that in 6,000 years there will be complete infection of the population assuming no population increase. So we have about as much history to look forward to as has been recorded. If there is some new mutation that permitted an aerosol transmission like there was for the Spanish Flu or Black Death then this process could greatly accelerate.

What are you going on about? The "population bomb" is a myth disproven long ago, isn't it?

/No, I don't disbelieve climate change. I just don't think it has anything to do with poor countries that emit only a tiny share of emissions and use only a tiny share of resources.
