Now if he sticks to it, he may just grow a pair. Maybe.

Besides, at this point, the best thing Congress can do to solve the financial issues is nothing. Doing nothing will save over $5T over the next 10 years.

He's done a very good job of keeping his word since he let Boehner hold him hostage on the debt ceiling. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt at the moment.

This is totally going to put the screws to the GOP. They're going to push to undue the cuts and therefore raise the deficit. This means Obama can hammer this point home next year and have recent soundbites/votes to say "The GOP doesn't care about the deficit, in fact, they want to raise it." As far as Obama is concerned, he already got the budget cuts. Now he gets budget cuts AND can use Congress (with their 9% approval rating) and Congressional Republicans as his whipping boy.

Typically, I would say yes but Obama has kept most of his promises. A majority of his campaign promises but definitely most of the promises he made since taking office.

Actually, if the cuts take effect and the taxes return to pre-Bush levels, the deficit will shrink by $5T or more. So, in this case, failing = winning.

AirForceVet: The chess game between President Obama and the GOP continues.

Obama's the only one playing chess. I don't even bother defending him to my progressive or conservative friends. In fact, I get more excited when the chatter grows that he is doomed. Ever since Hillary he has proved over and over that he'll beat the odds. Sure, everyone has their set-backs, and the way the game is set up, you're simply going to have to accept that you won't always win. But he is a frigging Judo master politician.

Good point there. It would not surprise me at all if Obama privately figured that the super congress would fail regardless, and allowed them to paint themselves into a corner such that the only way to win is to do nothing and let the system reset to pre-Bush levels.

On the other hand, that's some pretty cold calculus. I'd also like to think that he's not that jaded yet.

Indeed. When he decides he's going to play the game, he goes all-in. The whole "here's my long-form certificate" to White House Correspondent's Dinner to "Osama's Dead" week ought to show you that he's not a politician to be trifled with. Donald Trump was seen by some as a legitimate candidate at the start of that week. 7 days later, he was a punchline.

He's play.ing the reelection game well. So far, the only thing he's said about his opponents is that playing their quotes, verbatim and without commentary, would be a good strategy for him.

He came out and said what he needed to- mainly, that he's holding Congress to its word. What can Congress say- "We weren't negotiating in good faith?"

I have no hope that Democrats won't find a way to cave.

yes. certainly since the summer of 2009. not just CNN, mind you - the mainstream media as a whole. a recent pew study backs this up, with obama receiving BY FAR the most negative coverage of all the candidates in the presidential race.

they do it not because they have a right-wing agenda like fox. they do it because they're terrified of being called liberal by fox. the trouble is, reality actually does have a liberal bias (or moderate, at least, which is called liberal these days), so they lean right.

CNN and the rest of our shiat media have a profit bias. They'll play whatever crap gets the most viewers even if that means turning the news into a Jerry Springer like, dumbed down circus all the while keeping their corporate parents safe and happy. Fox is the best example of the Jerry Springer-ization of our "news", but CNN certainly doesn't escape the temptations.

You voted for the guy who would cut funding for government services for political purposes, without regard for their impact on the real economy? By allowing the cuts to go through, you're conceding to the GOP that the budget deficit is a crisis and is a higher priority than job creation.

Well hell, I've always said it: He plays 3 dimensional chess while the GOP keeps failing at Connect Four. Obama took the long game for this and it's starting to pay off.

Soon enough he'll paint the GOP into a corner that no matter what they do they'll lose.
