Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but Dennis Miller is holding up as well as an incontinent bladder.

Why would we be speaking Chin'sa third-most-common language--one that only 70 million of the 1.5 billion people in China speak--when there is another language (Mandarin) that about 1.3 billion people in China speak? I guess they not only all look the same, they all sound the same, huh Dennis?

I like the Star Trek reference.

Also, Cantonese? Why would the US speak a dialect of Chinese that is spoken by a minority of the Chinese population and is not the official dialect used to conduct business?

Looks like we had the same thought at about the same time.

Also, I'd be pretty impressed if people can go from zero Cantonese to proficient Cantonese in 8 months. I know it's possible, but Cantonese has a bunch more tones (7 traditionally, 9 if you count the modified tones) than Mandarin, and the 5 tones in Mandarin seem to give most non-native speakers shiatfits when they try to speak.

Time to face facts, Dennis: You bet on the wrong horse. You thought that you could regain some popularity after 9-11 by turning your shtick hard to the right, but it isn't working, is it?

Here's the thing Miller, you are trying to be an ineffectual comic playing to an audience who keeps Jeff Dunham employed. Stop it. From all of us man, just stop.

Dennis Miller is as relevant as a guy selling sunscreen to Schopenhauer's daughter at the convergence of the Tigris and Euphrates.

I'm from New Jersey. It's easy to master the 10 dialects. Just sound like a moron in 10 different ways and you just about cover it.

yep.
At this point in his career arc, I think he's just angling for a speaking part in the next Larry the Cable Guy movie. Maybe like an uptight sociology professor in Larry Goes to Vassar or something.

That is a highly debatable matter of opinion.

I love it when "conservatives" chide liberals for being obsessed with celebrities, then they parade every washed-up "celebrity" they can find that agrees with them.

Actually I do and he really was. Then 9/11 happened and he went bat shiat insane.

Dennis Miller is another one of those folks who were by and large genial, vaguely libertarian-ish, and actually funny before 9/11, who turned into raging conservative "Bush is a god, Obama is evil' hard-ons on 9/12. James Lileks is one, too. Drew Carey was going that way but I think he chilled out, not to mention he got the Price is Right gig. There's a few people I know in my personal life as well who did the same hard right turn.

The thing is that it also seemed to kill their sense of humor at the same time.

Yeah, I remember when he used to attack anybody, but then suddenly Republicans were off limits.

Sucks, too. During the mid 90s, when his show and Chris Rock were on the air, HBO had some of the funniest writing on TV.

Dennis Miller: I don't want to go on a rant, here, but America's foreign policy makes about as much sense as Beowulf having sex with Robert Fulton at the first battle of Antietam. I mean when a neo-conservative defenestrates it's like Raskolnikov filibuster deoxymonohydroxinate...

Perhaps he is saying if OWS had their way our educational system would be so impressive as to make this a possibility. Sounds like an endorsement to me.

Leaving aside the Dennis Miller trademark "I don't have the slightest farking clue what I'm talking about"-ness as evinced by the "Cantonese" remark, if we started actually enforcing anti-trust laws, adjusted progressive tax rates to something resembling sanity, drew down on military spending and implemented a single-payer health care system... We'd start resembling a country that has a problem with monopolistic business practices and a small power elite, a fairly regressive tax regime and, until recently, a severe public health care problem because they were trying for a shiat-pile adhoc mix like the US?

The only thing that might get actually compare is military spending per capita. And that's, coincidentally, one of the only things China does right.

Man, the conservatives are really scared of OWS. It seems like this week they've really realized that they're losing control of the message.
