Come on Des Moines! Everyone deserves this kind of protection.

2011-11-21 09:47:28 PM
Disgusting.

Next thing you know they'll be letting women vote!

This will be a huge victory for the victims of gender identity theft.

2011-11-21 09:48:51 PM
I don't even get why this is an issue, judge people on how they treat you, why protect a class just cause they like high heels or stuffing socks in their crotch? Making laws like this just seem to alienate people longer, people should see how stupid they are acting and it will all work itself out.

2011-11-21 09:49:11 PM
Yes, it should be.

How will they get out of the kitchen with the aprons tied to the stoves?

This isn't designed for interpersonal relationships. It's geared more towards "Hey, is it true you used to be a man\woman? Awesome. You're fired, get out."

If I were transgendered I'd want to be oppressed in Des Moines. The feelings of anger and bitterness toward it would be all I'd have to cling to in a vain attempt to break up the monotony of living in Iowa.

2011-11-21 09:53:14 PM
Sounds like a good idea to me .. if they do their work, pay their rent and generally act like good neighbours, of course they all should be protected.

2011-11-21 09:53:19 PM
yes, they get the same protections as everyone else, and that's what this spells out. Even though my question is, why should it have to? Aren't we passed this crap yet?

2011-11-21 09:56:20 PM
Sounds more like a private rather than protected class... No need to make it public.

And that's final.

/ you might be a nerd if you found that amusing.

Yeah there are already laws in place to prevent this from happening, even in right to work states if someone gets fires they can still sue for wrongful termination. I should know since we got sued a few years ago and I had to testify 4 different times, I didn't fire the person but it was assumed since I was in management that I had heard something about someone hating the person let go.

/they weren't transgendered
//they did deserve to be fired

More to the point, they're including language that makes hetero vanilla a "protected class" in the same way they created "protected classes" by including Blacks, Republicans and Catholics.

Curse you hetero vanillas!

FTA:

In 2001, "sexual orientation" was inserted into a Des Moines human rights ordinance that bans discrimination based on race, creed and religion, among other things, in housing, employment, or use of public accommodations.

You'll get over it, Des Moines. Sooner or later.

2011-11-21 10:09:04 PM
There are already laws that protect the mentally ill in Des Moines.

If this is being considered seriously in Des Moines, it's a good sign that civil rights are growing from the coast and moving in toward the Bible Belt.

Frankly, since Mississippi didn't pass that bullshiat "personhood" thing, they're way ahead of where I thought they were.

Indeed. They've made the 20th century. Give them a century or two and they'll consider letting gays exist.

//By then they'll focus their rage on robosexuals and androgynous androids

Iowa permits gay marriage. It's in the middle of the country.

California, progressive darling on the coast, does not.

Your argument is invalid.

Monogamous WASP heterosexuals would become a "protected class" with the inclusion of this language.

Problem?

Look at the soil around Des Moines, Farkers. You can't build on it, you
can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming.
But I know what's really going on, Farkers. I know it's the queers.
They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay
Martians. I swear to God.

I think most folks figured that out with the gay marriage thing.

Besides, I kind of figured Des Moines and Ames were more progressive being that they're college towns in the heartland and all.

//oddly enough, of the two people I've known from Iowa, one was really, really repressing some stuff

Why not just ban discrimination, period? Why atomize everybody into all these "protected classes"? "Hey, lets's make them insert 'no sense of rhythm' and 'can't carry a tune' too!"

And why pretend that white heterosexual middle-class males are never discriminated against? Not that that's me, I'm neither completely hetero nor would I be "middle class" anywhere it's rained in the past 20 years, but still.

Identity politics is stupid. Whether it's "gender identity" or Stormfront. For one thing the power/wealth/influence differentials within the group are as significant as those between groups, as any white trash Appalachian class warrior will tell you.

If y'all have to belong to some small subset of special snowflake, at least don't make it a political issue. Have your holy days, wear your T-shirts that say stuff like "Kiss Me, I'm A Left-Handed Heterosexual Lithuanian Dental Hygienist!", but don't keep dividing the pie into ever-smaller slices based on some calculus of Identity.

Sheesh.

Krieghund:

I really don't know, but I hear that Iowa is a lot more progressive than people on the coasts assume.

A couple years ago one of Lexington KY's foremost veterinarians sold her practice to move to liberal blue-state Iowa.

But me, I think it's cold in winter here in Drewville. In Iowa, to quote Wikipedia (again), "Average winters in the state have been known to drop well below freezing, even dropping below −18 °C (−0 °F)."

Tornados in the warm seasons, one hell of a cold season. No thanks. With weather like that no wonder they try to accomodate eveybody who bothers to live there.

What's wrong with North Dakota, politically speaking, is too few owners for too much land & resources, which is probably because so few people want to live there. A few thousand of us hippie commie types could move to Bismarck and Fargo and pretty much take the state over by voting early & often, unlike in a state with a stable or rising population. I'm game if y'all are; it might be worth the weather.

2011-11-21 11:01:02 PM
I remember Des Moines being somewhere to drive (about two hours, though) to see really cool shows. Had no idea they were off the chain this liberal.

Didn't Michelle Bachmann win Iowa or something? What the hell's wrong with Iowa?
