Looks like that bridge has been hit many, many times. Like subby's mom.

That's sheer folly!

Let the tires down a bit. Or take another route. Or wait for the bridge to erode. Whatever is most convenient.

The driver should have tried Tooting before he left Staines. Looks like that bridge made his roof Slough off.

There's a low railroad bridge on the Cal Poly, SLO campus. I remember a truck carrying pancake mix managed to go past the warnings, which including chains that hung down and would hit the truck to warn drivers they were too tall for the bridge. It apparently blew open the back of the thing and covered the roadway in white powder. Mess was there for months.

I know that bridge very well - it's soooo clearly signposted and there is a slip road to the right, just out of that picture, that takes high vehicles up to the level of the railway so they can use a crossing with barriers.

It takes a special kind of stupid to not notice the warning signs and take the alternative route.

Link below to Streetview for those interested - yep the Google Camera Car took the diversion.

I understand FTFA that 7 warning signs, plus a flashing final reminder, an angry danger-paint actual bridge, and the fact the road was called Bridge Road were no obstacle to our young Jedi here....

Someone want to help us out with the "Ducka you Heada - Lowla Bridgida" sign from Looney Toons?

Seems my Google-Fu is somewhat wanting tonight.

I was nearly a tard statistic.

Many many years ago when I was a cable guy, I took out the bucket truck. After a yummy lunch in the park, I headed off to my next stop. Approaching a low bridge, I made a mental note of the WARNING 9'9" CLEARANCE sign. Thinking nothing of it, I continued on. Then, it struck me...I'm about 12'10"!!!

I slammed on the brakes and avoided catastrophe with about 10 feet of road. I backed up, did a huey and got the hell out of there. My heart was pounding in my throat. All I could see was my boss handing me a pink slip and my GF dumping my stupid ass.

As it turns out, I quit anyway and got a new GF.

I drive a box truck for work, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies, etc etc.

I've never come close to doing anything like that, but it seems every other time I bring one of our trucks in to the garage, I see one of the rentals out back with the top peeled open like a tin can.

One of my favorite stories from Please Kill Me (which is a frigging awesome book) is when Iggy Pop and the Stooges managed to hit a low bridge in Ann Arbor, in a rented truck, full of rented gear. If I found the right one, yeah, you can still see the damage. Good times.

I can't tell you how many times some jackass hits the train bridge near UofL in front of the old Ford factory. Signs all over the place too. I don't care if I should've left 20 minutes earlier to anticipate some dumbass like this making me late for work, they should anticipate their truck being being two feet taller than that damn hole that tells you how farking tall it is!

Stadium bridge over State? That one's about to get knocked down.

The incident took place at 12.45pm in Bridge Road, Ely, (A142) and caused the road to be closed in both directions.

.45? Is that like 12:27 or something?

Welcome to every September 1st around Boston and Cambridge (the USA one), as this year's crop of first-year university students arrive with their rented moving trucks and proceed to sardine-can them under bridges on Storrow and Memorial Drives. You'd think someone who got into MIT would know that an eleven-foot truck doesn't fit under a nine-foot underpass.

It's not just the students; commercial drivers and tour-bus drivers do it too.

If things repeatedly happen, at some point you have to start placing more of the blame on the builders/maintainers of things and not the users. Like the parking lot planters that have footpaths thru them. If you're an experienced parking lot designer, you ought to know people aren't going to give a damn about your "vision" for the pretty planters and just design them with paths or put them in places where they're not an obstruction. Likewise with bridges and such, if you're going to have them so low that certain kinds of vehicles can't pass, put a lightweight barrier (like one of those hanging pipes that parking structures use) of the same height somewhere away from the bridge so that the truck will hit that and the driver will hopefully jam on the brakes and avoid hitting the actual structure.

Heard a joke on radio the other day strangely pertinent:

I sat in bumper to bumper traffic the other day and I got tired of waiting for the road to clear. I walked up to where all the flashing lights were and I see a semi crammed under the overpass. Me being me, I walk up to the driver while he's waiting for the cops to hand him a ticket and say, "hit the bridge, huh?"

The driver looks at me for a long minute before saying, "no, I was hauling this here bridge and ran out of gas."

linker3000: It takes a special kind of stupid to not notice the warning signs and take the alternative route.

Its a white van driver. Only beaten by c**tish behaviour on the roads by cyclists and worse than taxi drivers. They never pay attention to signs but normally they can bully over road users but you can't bully a bridge
