looks like fun but it's not really surfing, is it?

it is the "latest hot extreme sport" among the travel adventure community,

Heh heh. See? They did a funny there.

Want to ride a sled, but you aren't clever enough to realize snow is softer than rocks?
Then volcano surfing may be the sport for you!

Great! Something to do once hippo wrestling season is over!

Got distracted by the youtube link from that article to the guy who did 107mph down that mountain on a bike.

Jebus.

/that crash looked painful.

If you ever drop your surf board into a river of molten lava, let it go, because, man, it's gone.

39MPH? Lame. Put wheels on the sled and then try to control your rocky death.

That is a very active volcano, with 23 erruptions since 1850. Still, the odds of it errupting any given day you would spend on it is improbably low.

More relevant is the cooled lava being smooth enough to get your speed up nicely. But you can do that on asphalt.

I pride myself on having the intelligence to avoid unnecessary danger when there is little to no gain. This is why I will live a long time. "Volcano" "surfing" seems like a lot of risk for little gain.

Actually, that looks kind of fun... I was envisioning shooting out of a mountain atop a red hot lava flow, which is inaccurate, as it turns out.

Given how hard I ran into one of the skaters while going full tilt WFO OPR last night during a double header... I'm sure today she is wishing she was doing something safe and tame like volcano surfing instead.

i surfed down the outside of S P Crater in Arizona. I did indeed get massively road rashed but only at the bottom.

Villagers have discovered that sacrifices to the Volcano come willingly and pay well for the privilege when they intone the magic word surfing. Next up border coca surfing.

It looks like fun. But wouldn't the video had been better if it had, you know, more video in it? I don't get the whole point of stringing a bunch of stills together and calling it a video on Youtube. Do people get some sort of sexual excitment from it?

The meter read 39 kph which is closer to 24 mph. Remember this is sliding over rocks with a piece of plywood not driving your Civic down the street.

What do you guys think? Or, should I go back to using "Elton John's Chinroll"?

No Tribes references?

Sliding on your ass down scree slopes/ ash slopes/ sand dunes/ snow slopes had been done ever since people started climbing them. I guess these guys just invented a new piece of gear for it. It's called a sled.

British: No Tribes references?

I thought that was "Skiing."

Also, no one plays Tribes anymore because FPS multiplayer is either an endless succession of crappy console games or Team Fortress 2 because THEY AIN'T GOT NO TASTE!

Or maybe not, I don't have nearly the market awareness I used to...

Yeas but it's quite another thing to slide down a hill of what is essentially broken glass.

I love how that bus is lookign up at the driver like "WTF do yo have me driving on?"

Now only if we can find a way to combine volcano toboggining with this:
content.artofmanliness.com
Like if wrap vines around your feet, slide down the inside slope of the volcano and dunk your head in the lava at the end.

Doesn't FARK have a "Darwin" tag yet?? {Keeping in mind that many evolutionary branches are dead-ends.} I'm picturing Jesus-fish-with-feet image, shrunk for taggy goodness.

Cool. I do PR (and pretty much anything else, including ref when needed) for Emerald City Roller Girls, and I skate for the Lane County Concussion: Master Brains #55. It's always good to find other Farkers who are into derby!
