Rand's critics have called her a bad novelist and a mediocre philosopher-a "fifth-rate Nietzsche of the mini-malls," as one writer put it

That gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling just reading that.

Nothing says "captain of industry" like paying $128 for a vinyl bag.

2011-11-21 02:39:36 PM
I can't decide if those bags are serious or some form of ultratroll.

I always thought that they would use bits from 'They Live' on bags

If you've ever wandered into a Lululemon store

I've never even heard of that store.

That's ok.. we can't all be hipsters. There's still a small place for you in society.

/ Have not heard of it, either.

so if it makes me happy to steal your bag, then it is ok?

Neither have I, but I'm kinda wishing they would put their money where their mouth is and go Galt.

They seem to forget the answer that was given when asked who John Galt was.

'A name I'm tired of hearing'

Hopefully some of the bags point out her atheism.

apart from the almost-comically-brutal beating death of one of the local branch's employees by another, I'd never heard of it either, and it's about a block from where I sit typing this. Then again, my Yoga-supply needs are at an all time low currently

thismomentinblackhistory: Hopefully some of the bags point out her atheism.

If you're an atheist, parcticularly of the proselytizing variety, Little Aspberger's Annie, ain't exactly the poster child you want for your team.

Though I used to have a blast trolling Ayn Rand threads on Free Republic , pointing out to all those "Pure conservatives" that their idol was not only an atheist but said that abortion should be the ufnfettered and "sacred right" of every woman.

I was amusing how many of them refused to believe me even after I linked them to a video of Rand herself saying those exact things in an interview

"Get forty cases of 'Atlas Shrugged' DVDs with each purchase. Or even without purchase."

Should we mock them with the same fervor reserved for those that where Che Guevara merchandise?

2011-11-21 04:46:48 PM
Where did I put that wear?

2011-11-21 04:58:13 PM
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I am going to mock them with the same fervor as I do people who confuse "where" with "wear".

Seems there would be a built-in ad campaign for Sunglass Hut in there.

Well, it will make it easier for sales people to spot people who can be convinced to buy into just about any old nonsense.

After that though, it's totally on. Buying a Che Guevara T-shirt is probably the most anti-Che thing possible. It's right up there with being a punk band and playing an acoustic ballad with string parts.

\stares in the general direction of Billy Joe Armstrong

Randians are just Satanists without the goat blood.

Once again proving: Making stupid people feel smart is good business.

The difference between yoga and stretching is $100 sweat pants.

But mediocre philosophy sells: It makes the half-literate consumer feel smart.

Or as I heard it put on one Sunday morning show, when referring to Newt, "What a stupid person thinks a smart person should sound like."

[IRONIC] Ayn Rand quotes are now prominent on shopping bags

Uhh...I'm not sure crass commercialism and self-interest conflict to a degree that approaches irony. Then again, Ayn Rand devotees and yoga obsessives occupy approximately the same intellectual tier, so I'm not surprised that some confusion resulted when they met.

2011-11-21 05:10:06 PM
Ayn Rand's writings have destroyed some what would have otherwise been fine minds.

But yeah, WTF are they thinking? They won't have too many return customers if they're all out getting their asses kicked on account of their stupid bags.

Considering how I've heard yoga obsessives mention that they get nutritional and medical advice from what is essentially a glorified aerobics instructor, I'm inclined to agree.

Actual quote: "my yoga instructor says that it's not natural to eat meat."

Yeah I never heard of that store until then. Then my first question was "Is it some kind of hipster smoothie bar?"

Ayn Rand's writing are really good stuff. Don't get me wrong - i don't agree with all of it but it forces thought and at least makes people challenge themselves.

Perhaps a few missing peices here an there - like how the dollar is the best vote (problem is the value of a dollar is very different to different people) but the depth is worth exploring; just becasue the surface is easily dismissed does not mean that nothing lurks beneath.

That's it. I'm making a line of clothing and fashion accessories with They Live slogans in UV ink.

MARRY AND REPRODUCE
OBEY

Just think of the possibilities. Yoga pants and a black light are all it will take. I'll be movin' to Beverly in no time. Hills, that is.

Are these chowder-heads really going to start trying to make "Who is John Galt?" a thing? One of my whack-job cousins dropped this on a Facebook thread the other day. I resisted the urge to ask if they had read the book.

This is the kind of thing that must make CEO's of major corporations just laugh and laugh.

2011-11-21 05:15:37 PM
I saw a hottie on the metro the other day with one of these bags. I thought she was a crazy Randian, but now I know that she's a bendy yoga chick who shops at lululemon.

thanks subby

giggity.

abfalter: Ayn Rand's writings have destroyed some what would have otherwise been fine minds.

The fact that these minds were not able to readily process, evaulate, and discard Rand's college-freshman-level "philosophy" suggests that they weren't so "fine" to begin with.

"I love it when a man rapes me." - Ayn Rand

Put *that* on a shopping bag, oh daring ones!

They could have saved the license fee and just printed "Fark the poor" on their bags.

Randroids. Truly a scourge of the modern times. Few other political philosophies openly encourage psychopathy.

Read the article expecting a subtle more obscure quote. Felt hit in the head with an ugly bag.

NewportBarGuy: Should we mock them with the same fervor reserved for those that where Che Guevara merchandise?

I already do.

Ayn Rand and Che Guevara are forever the idols of the self-centered, angst-ridden teenager and those who never grow up out of that phase. The only difference is which side of the aisle they appeal to.

2011-11-21 05:22:55 PM
sell merely a pair of buttocks-compressing pants

Wat?

Uzzah: The fact that these minds were not able to readily process, evaulate, and discard Rand's college-freshman-level "philosophy" suggests that they weren't so "fine" to begin with.

And yet we still managed to put one of them in charge of the federal reserve for nearly twenty years. Go figure.

What a perfect marriage. A physical activity where the participant has to twist into convoluted shapes to get the best effect partnered with a political philosophy where you have to twist intellectually to believe it. -Brilliant

/founding objectivism and then taking social security and medicare is some massive twisting

2011-11-21 05:23:51 PM
Phish with Phive: Ayn Rand's writing are really good stuff.

If you value literature by the weight of the books, sure.

But by any objectivism standard, she sucks.

Rand appealed to me when I was 15. Since then, not so much.

She is kind of like the philosophical equivalent of a boy band.
