Android has all the malware because it's the only mobile OS out there worth using.

Just like Windows was.

The fact that Mac OS and iOS don't get targeted nearly as much is because there's almost nobody using them so the malware writers don't bother wasting their time targeting them.

The overwhelming majority of servers running the internet are Linux and Unix based. The overwhelming majority of servers hacked or infected are running Windows. It's not popularity that gets systems infected. It's how easy is it to do. Android requires you give permission for installation and access. If they are getting infected, it's because of people doing stupid things. You can't fix stupid. Those kinds of people should not be allowed to have open devices.

* of the Linux systems hacked, the majority are brand new systems set up by newbies to Linux

That plus the fact that even scam artists have a heart. They see someone on Apple, and feel sorry for them, so they keep the malaware away from those particular users.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that most of that malware comes from them or is funded or supported by them. Or at the very least that this is wildly overstated to get people to buy their stuff.

I think you probably could get some malware on your android phone but you really have to be hitting up some sketchy places to get it. And then you have to close your eyes and not read the notifications when you install the shiat you should not have downloaded. We've got 20 users at my work since Jan 2010 and we restrict absolutely nothing - instances of malware = zero. Go hawk your garbage elsewhere mcafee.

Malware is like any other business, you have to look at the cost/benefit ratio. OS X doesn't have a large market share, iOS does. It's also insanely difficult to write malware for iOS. So given fixed time and resources, you're better off with Android and Windows.

Don't let your hatred of Apple blind you from the obvious.

Twenty users, zero malware. Anecdotal evidence, which as we all know, is absolutely the BEST kind of evidence there is...

Good call. Those have 24/7 up time with perfect reception and call quality regardless of location. They don't even have batteries, let alone ever run out of juice.

Lets say you want to text person A. You fire off a message to them, only it goes to person B. Your phone says you're conversating with person A, but in fact, its person B who gets all the messages. This happens on Android and its not even malware.

That's a bingo. Just read the directions carefully to install Cyanogen (I did brick my Captivate but recovered it) and your phone will be fine.

Two things: the CM7 keyboard looks funny the first time you use it because numbers are missing. You have to go into the Keyboard settings and choose English (USA). Also, at least on the Captivate, the 2G/3G power button option is broke and if you try to use it the OS will go into a force close loop. So never try to switch bands, just leave it on 3G.

So? Linux-based systems have always required the user to actually be awake and not have lived under a rock the last 10 years to avoid compromise, it's the tradeoff for their greater flexibility and lower resource usage.

This is not really new. Don't download anything but high-rated stuff from the official app store and keep your permissions on manual if you're that worried about it. And don't do the kind of real-computer stuff that the people with android devices disproportionately want to do (anything involving rooting the device).

And what precisely is that measure? Number of viruses? Number of infections? fark me, I wish journalists would at least try to make an effort rather than just printing what their corporate pals hand to them.

I know... it's number of scaremongering bullshiat press releases that McCrappy have issued to get people to buy an antivirus product.

The thing with the Android market is that you don't need an antimalware product, because to a certain extent it's curated. OK, it's not pre-checked like iOS (which has recently been shown not to be safe), but by the time that someone like McAfee will have detected something, it's because it's a known problem, so Google will have pulled it.

AND the architecture is completely different to Windows because Applications run in their own little space. They can't screw over your phone like a PC trojan and go installing other crap. At worse they could screw up your data.

So, McAfee, take your shiatty products and shove them up your ass.

Or you can factory reset it, or install a different ROM, or try to, you know... DIAGNOSE the problem before getting a brand new phone. iPhones aren't immune to problems, you know. It's just that Apple will blame you for any problems, even if it's something that is Apple's fault.
