Great talk. It's nice to hear that Mr. Spock was wrong about something. Insufferable bastard, that pointy-eared miscreant.

It's pretty much impossible to land the shuttle on a killer asteroid now that 0bama sold Nasa to Soyuz.

I hate TED talks... No, I don't want to watch a 15 minute video. I'd like to read the 5 page transcript, but that's not available. I'm sure there are some deaf people who would love to get access to the material, too.

I couldn't disagree more. why would i want to read the transcript when i can get so much more from watching the scientists themselves talk about it. you would lose so much of the personality and charm of some of the speakers.

/sorry, deaf people.

Can't watch the video now, but does it involve something to do with Obamas awesomeness and shooting evil republicans at it?

Because I can get behind that.

No reason for hate, you just missed the area just to the left of the video where it says "Interactive Transcript."

To be fair, during the time of President Danny Glover, we only have some seismic activity.

There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser giant asteroid, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

My god it's like Tommy Lee Jones was yelling that into my mind. That came very close to the Farnsworth Effect.

BTW folks, I will be on the Desert Bus for Hope charity live stream tonight at 18:00 Pacific time, raising money for Child's Play, which gives video games for sick kids. Pretty cool charity. http://desertbus.org/

Did you seriously just say this?

TED talks are one of the few things on the internet that is subtitled to near perfection every time. Deaf people (of which I fit the description) love the site as they don't force you to read transcripts while trying to follow along with a graphical presentation. Instead everything is sharply packaged together and easily followed. They even blow google (which has a special internet video subtitling team) out of the water.

Also: the transcript is already available.

Immediately under the video is the option to watch it subtitled, so no, the deaf aren't going to have any trouble watching the video and knowing what he's saying.

A lot of these presentations rely not only on the words being said, but slides, actions, gestures, etc... things that don't translate to a transcript very well. This one isn't all that heavy on the side stuff, but the pictures do help with showing the scale of "something this size leaves this huge of a crater".

When i'm reading, i stop at all periods, commas, and parenthesis because that is the purpose of these grammatical tricks. That being said, did you have to put an aside in your second to last sentence?

Phil Plait is my idea of a celebrity crush. He's smart, he's cute, and he's ginger. Plus I've linked to his blog so many times that my friends call me Space Woman....

Well, yes, if used on something the size of the seventh planet (whose name is the butt of lame jokes.)
